    Never done cuttings before

I read something long ago about something in willow that stimulates rooting. If you have any willows on your property, cut some young twigs and put them in a glass of water, then put your cutting in the glass too, and it should root a lot quicker than water alone.

    First Rose...What kind is it?

I got a boxwood, a spirea, lamb's ears and peonies from the house next to me when it went into foreclosure. Also a good thing 'cause the new owners ALSO ripped everything out.

Good time for more Rose questions...

I like my Don Juan so much I bought a second one. With both I got blooms the first year. The first one, I dug up and moved in the middle of summer. I thought it would die, but no, it thrived!

    I am so bad . . .

Ain't that the truth! That's how I justify buying plants when I am struggling to find spots for the ones I have. And also when I hide plants when I come home from the garden center. And when I secretly order plants online late at night when nobody else is around. Addiction........ But I...

    Pick up a sky pencil

I love those. I got three a couple of years ago, also for the bed on the west side of my house. the bed is only 30 inches wide, and the concrete path is only 16 inches wide. I needed height but no width, so I got the sky pencils. They have grown several inches. I moved one the other day...

    Have redworms,what about earthworms?

One time I shredded a bunch of oak leaves and left them in a big pile in a corner of the yard. About two years later, you could stick your hand in the pile and you could feel bunches of worms moving and wiggling. It was so full of worms that just showed up and multiplied it was amazing! Kids...

type of wood to use for raised beds/retaining plants?

I asked a similar question about a year ago. Many people said they just used regular pine boards and they last many years. They are the probably the cheapest solution and don't add any harmful chemicals to the soil, especially the soil you are growing food crops in. I ended up buying 2" by...

What is your favorite leaf mulcher/shredder?

Thanks Davaroo. A couple of months ago, I altered my existing chipper shredder and its working really good now (as long as the leaves are bone dry!) It had a safety cap on it so you couldn't get your hand in but the slot for leaves was so small you could only get a handful of leaves in at a...

    LASAGNA GARDENING - anyone?

If possible, at least cut the sod where you are going to put the bed and just flip it over before you put the newspaper and cardboard. I didn't and I have some kind of grass coming up in my new raised beds. Although I have another bed where there were flowers and weeds so thick I decided just...

    Newspaper seed pots?

I made newspaper pots by wrapping folded newspaper around a beer bottle, folding up the bottom as well as I could, and securing the bottom and side with a small piece of gummed paper tape. The tape is made of paper so it will decompose.
