Anybody else have chickens that aren't paying their rent?

It appears that we're beginning to make progress. We've had two new layers in the last two days - a light brown egg and a green one. I collected nine eggs today, which is more than we've gotten in several months. However after posting a picture in another thread, I'm fairly confident that I...

    Stray Cats

I see that you're in SE MO. I've been to a no-kill shelter near St. Louis, and they have a great facility for feral cats. It is outdoors and separate from the domesticated cats. It allowed them to freely roam in a large cage with lots of things to climb on. I was impressed by the setup, and...

    Is this a rooster?

Don't yours? I'm not even sure where that ball came from. It was probably hiding in the overgrown grass when we bought this place last year.

    Is this a rooster?

Thanks guys. You're confirming what I already thought. We have 2 that look like hens, and 10 that are probably roos. Up until yesterday, I'd only noticed the size difference and thought 2 of them must be younger than the rest. Then the saddle feathers caught my eye. We're not ready to...

Question for beeks with a picture.

Schmije DH here the bee keep.... Sounds like you may have a failing queen in the left hive. Generally the bees wont draw comb unless you have a good flow. That generally is NOT this time of year. you can feed them (which it looks like you are) and that may help, but no garentee. I like to...

    Is this a rooster?

This might explain why we haven't been getting as many eggs as I think we should. I noticed yesterday that a bunch of my BO 'hens' appear to have saddle feathers! Nobody crows, but they're huge. I think they're about 5 months old, but I no longer trust the age we were told when we bought them...

Anybody else have chickens that aren't paying their rent?

Just six eggs again today. It helps a little to know that other people have had problems with the heat this year. And it's good to know that the BO's may be slower than the others. I've raised them before, and I don't remember that, but I'm almost positive that none of them have laid anything...

Anybody else have chickens that aren't paying their rent?

Well, I'm far from threatening to put them in the freezer, but I am feeling frustrated by their lack of cooperation. We've pretty much decided that they weren't as old as we thought when we bought them. I think it was deceptive, because our original flock were all mixes of leghorn and heavy...

Anybody else have chickens that aren't paying their rent?

I've been very disappointed in my egg production for the last few months. Our 15 girls went gangbusters this spring, and we had more eggs than we've ever had. We even made a FRESH EGGS sign for our front yard and earned a few regular customers. Then the coons found us. By the time we took...

    Pole Beans Not Flowering

I finally picked a couple dozen pole beans yesterday. There are more little ones, so hopefully we'll actually get some this year. The Japanese beetles hit them pretty hard, and they seem to have recovered nicely, although I'm not ready to call them a success for this year. As for the bush...

Need Suggestions for Supporting Tomato Plants

Yes, we pull them up, because we re-till the garden in the spring. We also pull out any cages, trellises, etc. for the same reason. We also like to move things around, so the set-up is different from year to year.

    Farmers Almanac

We were discussing this question a couple of days ago. I'm curious if somebody has ever gone back a year or two and checked whether it was actually accurate. I've never used it, but I've read it before, and it SEEMS to have good information.

Need Suggestions for Supporting Tomato Plants

Like Collector, we've had problems with cages falling over. We came up with a simple solution, and for the past 3 years, we've used it with NO cages falling over. Our cages are short sections of wire fence bent into circular cages, but regular tomato cages will work the same way. We hammer...

    My Mollie

I'm sorry for your loss. I dread the day that I have to deal with the same thing for my Stacy & Zeus. I hope you find comfort and that another4 legged friend finds its way to you. You seem like you have a lot of love to share.

Rain, blessed rain ! (And a question)

We also got our first rain in a couple of months today. It was wonderful! We have a plastic rain gauge on an old fence post near our main garden. It's at eye-level, so it's easy to read. We got three quarters of an inch today!

    Disappointment at the Grocery Store

We're glad you're here too. Welcome! DH is a meat and potatoes kind of guy. He's never been very fond of fruits and especially veggies - despite his mother introducing him to all kinds of things. One rule we have on our farm is "If we grow it, we try it." We've experimented with growing...

    Pole Beans Not Flowering

I got three green beans off my pole beans about a month ago, and NOTHING since. The vines have gone crazy on the trellis, and they look fabulous. There are a few flowers and no beans. Maybe it's the drought? I guess that doesn't explain your situation since you've had so much rain recently...
