Shocker, right?
It's been a long, long time since I really looked through the produce department at the grocery store. I grow my own and buy from other farmers when I can. The grocery store is only used to fill in the gaps when necessary.
Tonight we walked in the front door to find the...
Congrats! Are these your first goats? We've talked about getting them for several years, but we haven't taken the plunge. We have a several acres of woods that could really use some clean up by a couple of goats.
I've grown mammoth sunflowers that had white seeds. I don't know anything about genetics, but the birds love them just as much as the black seeds. As far as I know, it's just a different variety.
We've had a similar experience with family & friends. They typically think we're strange, but they ask a lot of questions, and everybody loves visiting our farm. We have several friends who come to our farm to escape the city.
One of my favorite things about living on a farm is bringing...
We kept goldfish in our open rain barrel at our old house. Never had a mosquito in there. We moved out over a year ago, and when we went back there about a month ago, little Goldie was still swimming around! Not bad for a 25 cent goldfish.
Wow. I was convinced that I was reading an article from the Onion, and I kept looking for something telling me that this is a joke.
So to spray my 5 acres, it would cost around $30,000. What a deal!
Does anybody subscribe to Mary Janes Farm Magazine? I received an advertisement in the mail, and I have to admit that I was intrigued by what it said. It's supposed to be specifically for farm girls, which I am. I'm considering sending off for the free trial issue, but I hate giving my name...
I will admit that some of my journal lives on Facebook in pictures and descriptions that I've shared with family and friends. One day I hope to fill in the blanks of my written journal with this extra info. I'd love to eventually write a book about how a suburban girl and a city boy made their...
I started a new journal when we bought our property just over a year ago. I write whatever is on my mind. Sometimes it's a significant weather event, the latest garden harvest, an attack on our chickens, or an update on a home improvement project. Other times it's a funny story that happened...
Thanks for the great info guys! The pictures are especially helpful.
DH set me up with a 55 gal barrel last night. It was a quick, temporary fix, since I had several buckets of scraps sitting on the porch attracting bugs. He cut the top and bottom off the barrel, dug a hole, and partially...
We've been composting on a small scale for several years. We've tried a bin made of old pallets, a tumbler made out of a 55 gallon barrel, and a simple pile on the ground. The problem for us is that we have dogs and chickens running around, so open food in the yard causes lots of digging and...
I saw this when it was still green a few days ago, but I thought it was TWO tomatoes growing up against each other. The scale is reading in pounds and ounces.
I just tried the recipe for zucchini candy, and it's AMAZING! I even had some overgrown patty-pan squash that I chopped up and tried. They taste basically the same as the zucchini. This is a great use for excess/overgrown squash!
My work friends thought I was really weird when I told them...
Look for Mrs. Wages seasoning packs at the grocery store. They'll be with the canning supplies. The Hot Salsa is our favorite, but we also make lots of Pasta Sauce. You'll need minimal ingredients, and the instructions are on the package. Around here they cost about $3. It's great for a new...
Slice up some apples, toss them in the crock pot, and walk away. Stir every so often and stop when they're as soft as you want them. You really can't mess it up. If you want sugar, cinnamon, etc. add that in too. It will smell SO GOOD!
The lemon is probably to keep the apples from...
I think I have the same dehydrator as you do, and I love it! Our favorite dehydrated fruit is peaches - they're like candy. Strawberries (chunks or leathers) are a close second, and apples are always a hit.
I'm going to have to try that zucchini candy. I'm swamped with them right now.
I'd spread them out of cookie sheets, freeze them, and dump them into ziploc bags for later. This is much better than freezing them into one giant clump.
