the progression of this year's garden

haha, I was expecting a more complicated reason. Thanks. I have all of my plants in planters, much smaller than your boxes. I was told that keeping veggie plants in planters like that, allows heat (especially here in TX) to get to the roots and stunts their growth. Is that true? Did you...

    Disappointment at the Grocery Store

I'm really glad to be here and hear your perspective. I'm just now figuring things out. A few months ago, I didn't know what GMO stood for. I still don't know what vegetables are "supposed" to look like or taste like. I've heard older people comment that the veggies don't taste like they used...

    Disappearing Cantaloupe

It's called OC, and it will definitely make people be gone. I didn't look like the guy in that image when I got hit with it. I looked more like this girl:

    Disappearing Cantaloupe

I suspect it was a human as well, but for the record... My dog knows she isn't supposed to get into the cat food, but she does it anyway. I've caught her in the act a couple of times, so she figured out that eating it on the spot is a bust. She's started climbing up on the shelf where the cat...

    New Weed Control (hopefully)

I had some goats growing up. They are the most aggravating animals ever. They are smart, yet simultaneously stupid. They will find a way to ruin anything. They will climb on your car with their hooves, and will eat a pack of cigarettes whole. Aggravating, but lovable. they are untrainable and...

GMO Protection Act - Something else to make you mad

I posted this on facebook as soon as I saw it. Fairly predictable; nobody read it. Don't worry everybody, everything's OK, just go back to sleep.

    A world gone mad .......

I've never seen that little bit that hoodat posted, but it's exactly how I feel about grass lawns. Who's idea was it to make green lawns the norm, and why? It irritates me, the expectations of people, that you keep this nonflowering, nonedible, worthless crop cultivated on every non paved inch...

bleach in the water (how to kill mosquitos)?

OUCH! 138$ for the 58gal barrel + diverter system . That's exactly what I need though. I can get the 55gal plastic food grade drums on CL for 25$ each. The link you gave put ideas in my mind though. I think i can build a similar diverter/ particle separator out of junk that I already have...

bleach in the water (how to kill mosquitos)?

Thanks for the ideas everybody! I'll try some of the suggestions, probably garlic first, for the time being. I've found food grade sealable drums on craigslist though for cheap, so I think I'lll just get some next paycheck and keep my water there. Better all around, won't evaporate in the texas sun.

bleach in the water (how to kill mosquitos)?

I collect rain water in a couple kiddie pools which I use to water my plants. Only problem is, mosquitoes lay their eggs in it and I get those nasty little larvae. I don't need any more mosquitoes. Someone recommended I put a cap full of bleach in the water; he said it would kill the skeeters...

Problems with watermelon and cilantro et. al.

Well the cilantro is a bust. Something got to it. A bird I'm guessing. I came out and all that's there is a stump. Whatever it was also chopped up some of my bell peppers. Here's one of the beans: and this is what it looks like inside: Whatever that is inside, looks underdeveloped to me...

    Strantor is in Texas.

I figure I'll probably be hanging around here asking stupid questions for a long time, so I might as well introduce myself. Copied & pasted from my member page: Hi, I'm Strantor. Of course that's not my real name, but close enough. I'm 26, married, 2 kids. Veteran of the US Navy Submarine...
