    Corn troubles

Thanks for the input...yes it has been an odd summer so far! I am about 20 minutes form the beach so we do get some of that coastal influence. Our highs are typically in the low 90's and on the occasional heat wave we push up closer to 100. The lack of development doesn't look like missing...

    Corn troubles

In late April I planted sweet corn, Early Sunglow. I have watered it regularly, fertilized it twice and it is just not producing decent ears. I have harvested 2 full sized ears, about 10 days ago and last night I pulled off another 5 but the ears were not filled out completely. When I gently...

Heading over to the dark side folks!

I am dying to get some chickens! We live in suburbia and while city code allows it, our HOA is going to be another story. This winter I plan to work on them so that I can get some next spring....unless of course I can find a way to make it happen sooner :)

What did you can (freeze, dehydrate, preserve) today?

Thank you that looks delicious! Some of the other recipes there look really good too, but I notice it does not say how many jars each recipe makes. I am such a newbie...how many jars did that recipe make?

When to start cool season crops?

The Fall planting post got me thinking about winter planting. My first frost date is 11/12 so I know I can squeeze in another round of warm season crops as I have 16 weeks (or 112 days.) But how do I determine when is the right time to start seeds of cool weather crops...can anyone give me...

    another corn question :)

I have never done what you are proposing but I think it is a great idea. I am envisioning the cornlock and along the outer berm (just on the inside) plant your pumpkins so that the roots will be inside the irrigation area and you can then train the vines to run along the outside of the flood...

What Are You Planting Today, This Week, This Month?

This is my first year growing the Lemon cukes and they are a big hit...flavor is lightly citrus-y, not quite the refreshing cool from a typical cuke, but everyone seems to really like them. I only bought one start at a local nursery and it is very prolific!

What did you can (freeze, dehydrate, preserve) today?

Punkin, can you share your zucchini salsa recipe? I just made a small batch of salsa last night and was thinking I should add some chopped zukes to it...but thought maybe I was just weird! LOL!

    FALL Gardening!

I am starting to think about my fall garden...in fact I was just looking up my first frost date :) Surprised that I never knew it before! Looks like I have time for a second corn crop, and I will definitely put in some more tomatoes. I am not sure that I understand how this works...I have read...

    Couple of Questions

Yep, blossom end rot...add some calcium to the soil and watch your watering habits. Toms like to be evenly moist, they don't like to dry out and then get flooded :) As for the beans, have you had any strange weather fluctuations in the last 10 days? Did you fertilize the beans?

First Black Krim and Big Beef tomatoes. Pics

Those are some nice looking toms! I want to try the Black Krim, I had heard about it about a month ago and I keep looking but haven't found it...although in my quest I ended up coming home with Lemon Boy, Black Cherokee, Green Zebra and a beef style. Each shopping excursion seems to tempt me...

    Accidental worm farming

I have worms and what I do is I keep a large ziplock bag in my fridg. I throw food scraps into it ( some goes into the compost pile and some I save for the worms) Every once in a while, I put the contents of the bag into a blender/food processor and give it a whirl to break down the chunks. Then...

    ? on Crook-necked yellow squash

How close are your plants to each other? My squash are all pretty close, the leaves touch..but that helps to act as a living mulch. They plants keep the soil a bit cooler and help retain moisture....I don' t think close is all that bad. As for the beets, I don't have any experience so I am not...

What can you do with fresh peppermint?

I have heard that if you give some a rough chop and put it into ice cube trays, then cover with water, that you can make minty ice cubes for your tea, lemonade etc. Just pop out all of the frozen cubes into a large freezer bag.
