    Powdery mildew

Any type of fungicide will work. I prefer liquid copper but a more natural one would be the milk/water spray some people use or apple cider vinegar and water. The trick is to mess the fungi's pH up. I don' know the specifics of the milk or vinegar recipes , so maybe someone who does will fill...

Someone talk to me about Elephant garlic( I pulled it) update

The elephant garlic is a lot milder in my opinion. I love to cook with it. We normally use it in stir fries and such. It goes really well with shrimp and veggies in a little soy sauce over rice. This is my first year growing it , but it seems to be doing well despite my first timer mistakes. I...

Someone talk to me about Elephant garlic( I pulled it) update

Sounds good! I love garlic. One of the local supermarkets has a salad bar item with whole cloves of garlic, roasted peppers and sundried tomatoes in olive oil that is really good as a snack/appetizer. Of course if you eat enough of it your breath could stop a train , but I REALLY like it.

Someone talk to me about Elephant garlic( I pulled it) update

Thanks for your help guys. Now I have to decide when to dig them. I made a mistake by leaving the flowers on for too long ( chalk that one up to a learning experience ). We've had so much rain I'm almost hestitant to dig them until the soil dries out a little , but the leaves are starting to...

How is your garden doing so far?

Reinbeau - I know exactly how you feel. We have had more cool rainy days this year than we've had for a long time. The only thing that has helped us is the days in between the rain have all been in the upper 80's or low 90's. I am so hoping I don't have to deal with blight on my tomatoes this...

How is your garden doing so far?

I'm in southwest Virginia. The reason my to do list is short right now is I'm kind of between seasons right now. The peas, radishes and lettuces are all about finished and the cabbages and brussel sprouts have around a month to go. My tomatoes , squash, cukes and beans have only been in the...

Someone talk to me about Elephant garlic( I pulled it) update

OK - I planted elephant garlic last fall. It came up and is doing great. It has giant blooms and I pulled some dirt from around the base to see that it has a very impressive bulb underground. My question is about when to dig it up? Do I wait for the leaves to fall over like I do with onions? Or...

How is your garden doing so far?

Good for you! I ended up planting my tomatoes very late this year, so I probably won't see blooms until next month :idunno Oh well. Everything is doing really well out there though. I got most everything mulched with some nice , fresh grass clippings yesterday , so I'm in good shape for a while...

How is your garden doing so far?

Thanks Hattie! It did say on the seed pack they originated in China. It's just so much easier to get them at the local Kmart, so I'm hoping I can find them next year. I bet they were nice garnishes in the hands of an experienced carver. I would recommend them to anyone as they are very vigorous...

How is your garden doing so far?

Here goes. These are the watermelon radishes I mentioned yesterday. The seeds came from Kmart and I'm hoping I'll be able to find them next year. They were a " Martha Stewart" brand of seed , that I had never seen before. The radishes themselves have a very good flavor without getting "hot" like...

    Powdery Mildew- again!

Some people will disagree , but I have always had good luck with the LiquidCopper fungicides. I know it is a " chemical " , but it is approved for some " organic " uses. I think the copper in it mainly comes from animal fats. It's been around for years and if I remember right it can be used up...

How is your garden doing so far?

Hidelight - I don't mind you asking, I'm in southwest Virginia. I think we're in zone 6b or so with the Appalachians to the west of us and the coast to the east the zone maps go from 6a to 6b to 7a in about 75 to 100 miles west to east. All of my cool weather stuff was planted early so that...

    Deer?????

The deer have been in my garden already too. I have electric fencing but haven't turned it on yet. There are some commercial sprays available that are made with capsascin (sp?) but I've been thinking of running some Habanero peppers through the blender and making my own spray. Besides the soap ...

No I don't think you were supposed to weight it down with anything. I'll ask my wife when she gets home and try to find the recipe if I can.

How is your garden doing so far?

OK I have new pictures! Here's the kale : and some sweet yellow onions : the last veggies to be planted this summer ( beans, cukes, squash and tomatoes): and the cabbage and brussel sprouts and rutabagas that are already fairly large: That's my update for now. I'm pretty proud of...

Yes Hattie I have missed you guys! It's nice to have people to talk to that have the same interests. Around here most people can't be bothered with a garden , so yes I'm definately glad to be back! Hattie - how are things across the pond? Karanleaf - how is the greenhouse doing? vfem - how...

How do you make Sauerkraut? UPDATE..ITS WORKING

I'm just gonna jump in to add something that I didn't see mentioned ( hope I'm not repeating something ) I remember seeing a recipe a LONG time ago where you could make kraut IN the jar. I think you pretty much made it the same way but just packed it into the jars and put the lids on LOOSELY so...

How is your garden doing so far?

Hey everyone! I'm finally back after sending the computer off for some warranty work. Looks like everybody has been busy. On the plus side, without the WWW to distract me , I really got a lot done outside. Finished planting tomatoes, cukes , summer squash and beans. I AM DONE! (for now anyway)...
