Well the tractor tires or other raised bedding might be your best bet. Sorry I just haven't had to do any raised beds here - we're lucky to have fairly decent soil - so I don't know how best to advise you.
You can grow almost anything in raised beds blueberries and blackberries included. My Question is what you mean by "barren". If by barren you mean "acidic" the blueberries would do fine just being in the ground. A soil test would tell you what direction to head in as far as blueberries are...
Green bean sprouts normally have a little bit of bean left when they first come out then the rounded "seed" leaves then spade shaped " bean " leaves. I would be glad to post a picture but it's the wrong time of year! Hope this helps......
Oh sorry! I was just trying to be helpful. I just joined yesterday and man this forum is a ghost town compared to BYC. I posted over there that some of us that talk about gardening should come over here........ Anyway we've been grilling asparagus lately it is wonderful.
I didn't see anyone else mention it so I'll bring it up. Be sure to put asparagus crowns somewhere permanent!!!! They will produce for 20+ years. My grandmother has 1 crown she planted in the sixties - it is now probably around 4'x4' and looks like some kind of bamboo in late summer. Yummy though!
My son and I grew one last year and it got to around 35 lbs. Ridiculous! But it was a lot of fun to grow and my son loved it. I'll have to try and find the pictures of it.
I always plant my cukes in a row then put two metal fence posts on either end and stretch nylon netting between the posts. The cages will work fine too but I use the netting for a lot of other things in the garden ( peas , beans , cantaloupes etc.) so it is cheaper for me to get a large roll of...
Have you thought about "yellow eyed" beans? They are really good but can be hard to find. Kind of like a black eyed pea but not nearly as strong/bitter tasting. I also found an old variety called " Logan's giants" that makes a 8-9 inch green bean that can also be used as a dried bean. I'm trying...
Yeah I confess it is an electric fence. Around here the whitetail deer will totally clean you out if you don't have electric fencing or regular fencing at least 5 ft. tall. I only keep it energized at night though. I'll try to post another pic later of my lettuce - I've been growing red sail...
Mine is looking ok. I can't wait until May so I can plant something besides cool weather stuff. My onions are out of control! Anyway, just a survey of sorts. I'd like to see what some others have growing so I thought I'd start.[/img]
I always plant a lot of tomatoes. I stagger mine about two weeks apart so they don't all produce at the same time. That way I can get 3 or 4 big harvests instead of 1 monster harvest. So you could pick up a couple of plants right around the last frost date and plant them then in june when the...
It will probably make a little seed pod that looks like a tiny tiny green bean. At least that's what broccoli does. They are both "western brassicas" so I'm assuming..... I've never let a cabbage go to seed. I 'm not sure if cabbages are self fertile either so if you do try the seeds they may or...
Just wanted to say "Hi" to everyone. I am a BYC member and we end up talking about gardening a lot on the byc forum , so I thought I would join over here.
