My tomato plants were frozen last night. I took a chance putting them out - our last frost date is May 11 and last night was very very cold!
I'm going to look into a greenhouse (cheap!) and see. I'm not sure where to put it, we have so many tree's around our house and property it was hard...
What is your Zone Jack?
We have such a short growing season here it can be annoying. We had a hard freeze last night and I'm hoping my veggies outside made it with milk jug covers.
My hydro system will be for inside the house - sadly I don't have a greenhouse (yet )
Greenhouses...
Mine is minute! I used a space about 20x20 last year, but with weeds and gophers we got almost nothing out of it.
This year hubby and I built 2 raised beds (6x3) and I am going for another one or two if I can. (one 4x2 or so for strawberries)
Anyhoo - I'm going small this year, in the hope...
Speaking of Bok Choy... will the seeds be damaged by a freeze?
I only put the seeds in the ground two days ago - but tonight we'll be going down to the 20's and I'm very nervous!
(I have radish, onions, carrots, tomatoes out there as well :he )
As far as I know the hydro you do need a medium to grow in, I have purchased some clay rocks. The rainforest system sprays water and nutrients onto the root area at set times. (aeroponics - i think)
THere are other systems that will flood the growing chamber or root area with the water and...
I've decided to join the hydro crowd!
Mostly for growing salad and herb goodies in winter, in the house - and in summer I'll use the system to get my starts for the garden going.
I just purchased a system (don't feel like building one myself)
I don't know What the heck I'm doing but I'm...
:D I just noticed where you live! I used to board my horse up there in Ramona - when I lived in Santee (and worked in poway)
Really pretty riding trails up that way!
Hope they will make it, I saw a big fat bumble bee making the rounds on my tree's... I heard him first, a nice deep buzz, like the harley of bees'... :D
I've got some burning bush on its way to me, I plan to brighten up my front yard with a few of them.
Check them out on line, you can buy a dwarf size as well. Leaves turn bright red in the fall.
I plan to thin down to one apple on each "cluster" and hope to get bigger ones.
I bought some ladies pantihose (knee high's) to put over the apples in the hope of preventing bugs from getting them. I hope it works! Even if I save a few apples for bugs this year it will be worth it.
I have two apple tree's and I don't know how old they are or what kind they are.
One produces red apples and the other green.
The green apples develop in pairs, they do pop out where there were flowers. The red apples, develop single where the blossoms were.
:gig Your neighbors are gonna think you lost it for REAL this time! :gig
I hope MY apple trees are ok, we're going down to 33 tonight. My tree's are full of blooms.
We have been luckier than most the past few years, our tree's were the only ones in the area with apples a few years. We live...
:lau so cute!
My kids love the garden, specially the peas - they eat them before they even get to the kitchen. My son loves beans, not frozen not in a can - so growing them is ideal.
Digging up potatoes last year was like looking for treasure, they were so dang excited to be the first to...
my dog gets them and she's not that fluffy - but she's so used to it now she takes them out herself... I even see the chickens get them, they'll stop and lift a foot and peck at it a bit then keep going. They get matted up in the horses tail and mane, so difficult to pick those out.
The kids...
Sandburs!
We moved here three years ago and I still can not control them, this year I tried sprinkling PREEN all over, but I didn't apparently get them soon enough, so I see them sprouting up already :barnie
I HATE SANDBURS!
