This may be a little off-topic, but I wanted to mention we managed to attract a lot of beneficial insects this year, both pollinators and beneficial predators like wasps, and one thing I found is that they seem to prefer certain types of flower structures.
Plants with tall flower spikes such as...
..that's something I'd really like to see. There could be a sticky with a suggested template:
- Name of variety
- source (for seed, seedlings or plants)
- number of days
- culutral informaiton
- yeild
- taste (for veggies)
- Did it meet your expectations
- problems you had
Just an idea...
..and delicious too. The variety is Charleston (85 days) , and it was very trouble free.
And look at the color!
Even though the trend is towards smaller size fruits these days, this one reminds me of the monster size watermelons of my childhood.
We had this growing on our front...
Oh sure I do this every year. I like to keep the lower parts of the vine away from damp soil to help prevent soil borne problems when the plants start to produce. I cut back maybe 8-10 inches on indeterminate varities.
Helps with air circulation too.

It's not hard....Here's how to do it assuming you've already uploaded photos to the Easy Garden server:
1) Just to back to "Uploads" on the blue bar above, and look in the lower right hand corner. You'll see a ink to "My Uploads".
2) Click on that and you should see your photos. Below each...
This is Moon & Stars. We've never grown watermelon before, and overall they have done really really well up to this point. This started at the base of the vine, and seems to be spreading outward. Not every tendril is affected however, and the plant has still set fruit. There are three good...
I have canna and colocasia as container plants, and I'm looking for source other than Brent & Becky's Bulbs (nothing against them, but I didn't really see what I wanted this year.) I ended up buying some from Home Depot, which was a huge mistake of course because I suspect they sold me last...
Well, I really can't offer any advice on that because Im not an electrician so I have no idea what would be needed to do that type of set up safely. However, I can add that barrels of this type are sealed at the top (there is no lid) so youd need to figure out a way to get into them.
I...
I was asked to flesh out the details for a post I did a while back, and you can download a guide the various components from my gardening blog Green Universe
This isn't really an instruction sheet, just detailed photos of the various parts and how they go together.
It's a Word doc.
Enjoy...
Does anyone know what this variety might be? This selfseeded from a bag of decorative "mini pumpkins" we got from Costco. The plants sure looks like a squash, even though the fruits do look like pumpkins, so I assuming it is a squash.
The fruits are creamy white when mature; very pretty...
I grew this from seed (Johnny's), it's a very easy plant and I love the big tropical leaves!
The ankles of this plant are not that attractive, so I think it looks best mixed with other plants. This one is planted amongst honeydew vines and zinnias.

We have some Hyssop, it's a great plant! I think Shiso was orgiallly used as a garnish for sushi - now replaced by those green plastic things
Wonderful photos!

When I was a kid a friend of my dad's got him good.. My father had planted tomtoes and was obsesssing on them, and his friend BIll just couldnt' take it anymore. So about 3 weeks after the plants went into the ground(?), my father looks out the kitchen window and ays "HONEY - guess what? We...
The same thing happened to us! We had some decorative mini squashes that we got at Costco and when they were spent we threw them onto one of our beds last winter. They composted and sprouted dozens of seedlings and we kept a few.
I love gardening "accidents" like this!
