Female pumpkin---update on treatment-New photo to come

I don't mean to sound negative, but I *think* hypodermic needles are controlled under federal nacotics laws and you need a prescription to buy them at a pharmacy. ~Phyllis

Raised beds, watering system & pavers are finished

Actually, the downspout goes into just the barrel on the far right through a mosquito screen, and the bottom white pipe that connects all four barrels allows the water to seek its own level and rise evenly between all four when it rains. And then the overflow valve at the top of each barrel...

Raised beds, watering system & pavers are finished

Well then you should stop by next time! We live up the street from the Amtrak station off route 128, so you probably drive right by our house when you're on the highway. Come by anytime. Last year we started with 2 barrels set on the ground, and we discovered pretty quickly that once the water...

    A Perfect Gardening Hat

:lau When I first wore it in the garden, my kids said "Mom, you look like Babci" - my 78 year old mother! Who has no sun damage either, so you can bet I don't mind looking like her! There's actually more to this garden fashion project - I want to find Solarweave SPF 30 fabric by the yard to...

    Neighborhood Kids

:ya Carlos, you'e an inspiration!:ya The other magical thing about gardening is that I've noticed any kid will eat a any vegetable they either grew themselves, or have picked themsleves. I can't even count the number of times I've seen friends of my own kids, whose parents tell me they hate...

    Gardening magazine?

This may sound crazy - but I find that the Johnny's catalog is one of the best resources out there for veggies, annuals and perennials. I save mine and use it all season. They manage to present an astounding amount of cultural information in a very succint mannner for hundreds of varities of...

I think you could Tutter - I got mine in about 5 days. There is also a velcro square on the back, and so you can roll up the back drape for more ventilation. The inside has a padded sweat band too. ~Phyllis

    A Perfect Gardening Hat

SO - after quite a bit of searching, I found what I consider to be the perfect gardening hat: I really love it! It weighs virtually nothing but is rated for SPF 50, the brim is 4 inches wide and the Legionnaire styele drape at the back completely covers my neck while I'm in the sun. The...

What is this from Radish Mix?(pic)

That's Spanish black radish, might be a variety called Nero Tondo because that's what we have and they look exactly like that. They are hot hot hot and I slice them very thin and use them in salad. ~Phyllis

what wood to use for raised beds

Do you mean the AQC? The Trex boards we used are 3/4 of an inch think, but trex is not as rigid as wood. Not sure that's any help, but I suppose a wood board used for the sides shoudl be at least the same thickness. ~Phyllis

    Hornworms

This is a great advice Pat, thank you - I was wondering about this as well. We have only 8 tomato plants, and I'm not keen on spraying for just this reason. Our chicken adventure starts June 18th, the day they should be at the Post Office! ~Phyllis

    planting mint

We gave our mint a spot off by itself in the yard at edge of our yard so it can just go crazy - it can be invasive in a bed. Also, there are several different kinds of mint, and some are not really good for culinary use as they can taste a bit harsh. I first planted peppermint and it was too...

Radishes - how do you tell when they're ready to pick?

I have a batch of Black Nero Tondo radishes that are at the end of their growing cycle (50 days) and the tops are lush and thick; so thick acutally that I can't even see the soil (they were spaced correctly too.) I picked one and the root was just beginnng to enlarge, is there any way to tell...

what wood to use for raised beds

We used Trex (the deck composite product) for our raised beds along with PT 4x4 posts for framing. My husband extensively reviewed the scientific research, and evidently PT has little negative impact on soil, the toxic impact comes from direct skin contact (hence it no longer being used for...

    Springtime in New England--pic heavy

Lovely - thanks especially for the pic of the golden chain tree. When I worked in Boston I use to commute past a white brick apartment building off Comm. Ave. that had one planted out front. It was a real treat to see it every day while it was in bloom! Is your Bleeding Heart planting uder...

Canning on a smooth top range?

Actually, I'll be a dissenting voice bcause that prohibition doesn't make any sense to me based on my experience. I've seen people use lobster pots, which are huge and about the same size as canning pots, on smooth top stoves with no problems. I've also seen people use cast iron such Crueset...
