I just read in my copy of Putting Food By that currants in many areas were ripped out because they carried a disease (fungus? I don't have it in front of me) that threated the white pine trees. That may be the explanation. :/
Came across this thread in a search for information on currants. I'd like to try to grow some red currant bushes here. Anyone have experience? I remember my grandmother having them outside Rochester, NY.
Here's one I'd forgotten. After moving in to DH's house and knowing very little about gardening, I found some scallions growing in an old forgotten kitchen garden. I used them in a casserole that night. DH, his good friend and I all spent the night throwing up. Apparently scallions that have...
Once again I had a very disappointing year. I did like my rainbow swiss chard which did pretty well until the weather got hot. My green beans met my expectations. My peas were abismal as usual. The chickens got through the chicken wire and got most of the tomatoes on the deck. I had one chili...

Thanks Rosalind! (Got my first welsummer egg yesterday-finally!! Just had to share that!)
Anyway, we've had a deer in our fenced yard once in 19 years. We have three dogs who use the perimeter as their potty and that seems to keep them away! We're lucky. They're all over the place around here. I...
I've been trying to research, at the library since my home computer caught a virus, so I have limited time. I am in zone 6 not far from zone 5 in eastern CT. I don't have a lot of space but I do have one spot where I believe I have room to plant two dwarf apple trees. I've read conflicting...
