I canned green beans & lima beans yesterday. Sadly, I lost about 2 gallons of green beans while helping Mom move.
@Crazy Gardner - I picked up some metal shelves at Lowes & Walmart to put my canned goods on. They hold 350 lbs per shelf. Nice garden haul!
The Cherokee are very similar to the Seminole hanging pumpkin. I've never tried the Seminole, but people who have grown both say there are differences between the two.
I got mine from Deep South Homestead on Etsy. I think they have some up on their store now. If you want, I'd be happy to send...
I know this thread is 8 months old, but I still have 2 of my Cherokee tan pumpkins on the wire shelf in my dining room. I would have had 3, but gave one to the chickens the other day. It was perfect on the inside and smelled wonderful! I harvested the last of the Cherokees this past Oct/Nov...
Sorry bay, been helping my Mom move out of her house.
I like it raw. I just pluck it off the vine & eat it or put it in a salad. You can stir fry, steam and add to soups/stews like any green, but I've never done that yet.
You can rehydrate them with boiling water and use them like you normally would. In soups or casseroles you wouldn't have to rehydrate them since there is plenty of broth. Also use them as crunchy toppings on a salad or potato. I find they keep better than freezing them.
Hey Bay! Hasn't today been wonderful!! We got very little rain, but the temps. Oh my!! It was 96* yesterday and now it's 67*.
Sorry about your garden. I had some successes and some failures. I tried to get a fall garden going, but the heat kept burning up my starts. We can try again next year. :)
Boy, I've been bad for not updating. :(
Let's see, the strawberries were a bust. Too darn much rain so they rotted while still green. I didn't even get to go pick any either. The upick was only open a couple of weeks and they lost all their strawberries too. So sad.
I got my potatoes up &...
My Yankee Bell's are still growing. I'm surprised I have as many as I do. I've never had much luck growing bell peppers. Other kinds of peppers yes, just not bells.
I picked this one today so that I can save the seeds. This is from the plant that I put in a pot right off my front porch. I...
That's a lot of hand digging.
Our ground never freezes. We just make sure we put it deep enough so we don't accidentally dig it back up. We use a ditch witch. Too old to do a lot of hand digging.
My potatoes seem to be recovering from the frosting they got a couple weeks ago.
I did some planting this past week. I've got my tomatoes in and planted my cucumbers and pole beans. Going to wait a bit on the peppers. Give them time to get a bit bigger before putting them out. My strawberries...
Oh Bee how wonderful! I know you talk about how awful your soil is. I'm so glad the hay from last year has broken down so well. What a Godsend for you this year as you garden. :)
I moved my strawberries early this year. Took them out of the bed and put them in containers. They are doing great!
Man, there was a bunch of tornadoes down south of us. Those poor people in Alto got pounded! When it finally got to us, it was just wind/rain/thunder. Now the sun is out.
Did y'all get any damage?
Storms coming through East Texas. Gusty winds, heavy rain, hail & tornadoes. Three tornadoes have already been confirmed. Keep your head down @baymule !!
Bay, take care with these storms that are heading our way. Watching channel 7, they just said the NOAA weather radio is down and the tornado alarms in Longview are down also. What a great time to be down.
Be safe!
I've never grown English peas. I can't stand the taste of canned peas unless it's in a soup or casserole. But, I have never had fresh English peas either. I've heard that they taste very different than the store peas. If you can them quickly.
