It's time to start thinking about my fall/winter garden here in Texas. Here's my most recent blog post on just that topic.

And here's a cool link to help know what to plant when. Just type in your zip code...
I put a big handful of ground oyster shells around each plant. I hear it's better to put it in the hole when you transplant, but it did help after the fact.
I wish there was more to harvest here in July, but the heat pretty much shuts down production for most of my plants. The cherry tomatoes are the exception, they look awful but they just keep pumping out bunches and bunches of ripe tomatoes.
I think most people just don't think about their food. Since I started gardening about a half dozen of my friends and family members have started their won gardens. It's like they see my garden and think, "Hey, I can do that too!" My sister in law even got chickens after hearing me talk about...
I don't think you can get much more organic that Bt. It's a naturally occurring soil bacteria. I used it on my squash, but they were already too far gone to save. The little black specks could be bug poo or it could be bug eggs. Do they move if you blow or brush them off? If so probably poo, if...
I'm really not sure. I know that exploding is caused by a build up of gas from bacterial growth. We did find a bunch of chicken eggs that had been hidden (probably for months, in the Texas summer) once and one of the eggs weighed much less than it should have (I didn't put it on a scale or...
I doubt it's as nasty as an egg that's been sitting at 99.5 degrees for almost 3 weeks though.
The smell was incredibly bad. I was gagging as I carried the incubator out and it took hours for the smell to dissipate from my bedroom.
Last night I was sitting on my bed, checking my email, when I heard this strange POP noise. For a minute I thought the neighbor was shooting off fireworks. Then I noticed a sickening smell starting to permeate my room. :sick
I turned on the light and saw that the window on my incubator was...
Well, an emo is one of those kids who wears all black and listens to depressing music. I guess the black bird thinks that only homosexuals wear bright colors. :somad
I saw another version of the same picture where the black bird called the colorful bird a "hippy" which I like much better than...
Of course! I'm using my onions and red bell peppers in the macaroni salad I'm taking to a BBQ, probably some herbs too. Nom nom nom! I'll probably take a big bowl of cherry tomatoes too, since I have so many of them.
Hope everyone has a fun and SAFE day. Watch out for the people who think it's...
Welcome to the group, growops!
That's a lovely little garden you have there. I think your list of improvements is a good one. I would start with a compost bin, since a gardener can never get enough compost. I also want some rain barrels, but here in Texas they could breed mosquitoes. I don't...
It looks to me like they did do it, they just didn't market them. But my point was that these products are not something that can happen in nature. Take Bt corn for example, they put genes from a soil bacteria into corn plants, that isn't something that can happen in nature. A cross between two...
