Cucumbers and a question about corn

I think the danger in watering frequently is that your plants never have to develop a deep root system. Then, you need to water frequently the entire season. If you let them dry out more, they have to go down deep. When I water, I stick a rain gauge in the garden. When it hits an inch, I stop...

Cucumbers and a question about corn

Hi :) Actually, your cukes don't have to grow on a trellis. I've only done that once in all my life. It is nice for not having to bend over, but they grow just fine on the ground. Regarding corn or anything, for that matter, about 1" of water per week is my rule of thumb. I would get that corn...

    Weeds--How do you control them?

Oh, I know what you mean about picking the choice spots for those needy weedy crops. I thought I had that this year, but a long cool spring has allowed very little germination of my root veggies but was apparently just perfect for about 5,000,000 lamb's quarters!!! Yes, I know the LQs are...

Anyone here do subscription sales of produce?

A couple more thoughts. My first customer was my physician. Docs might be a place to start. Yes, we all know they don't all practice what they preach, but I have had my doctor refer SO MANY people to me who needed to get a serious pile of organic, fresh fruits and veggies in their diets...

Anyone here do subscription sales of produce?

I would discourage advertising, actually. Just talk to the folks who are already buying your eggs. Are you already educating them on how your eggs are higher quality, being pastured and fresh? If so, they have at least one foot into the world of better food and one tiny niggling sense that not...

Anyone here do subscription sales of produce?

Hey Bee--This is my business--doing CSA. In fact, my spring share is the month of May (coming up soon--yikes!), the 20-week share starts in June, the fall share is from mid-Oct to mid-Nov and then I will have for the first time this year a fall/winter storage share. I'm on the inexpensive end...

What is your favorite gardening method, and why? Add pictures!

Mostly permanent beds and paths, 5-foot-wide beds. The beds are slightly mounded from lack of compression and addition of organic matter. I might plant rye this year for living paths, if I get around to it :) Also thinking about interplanting squash with corn for weed control and space saving.

    Weeds--How do you control them?

Here's my issue--What about those veggies that NEED to get weeded while they're still trying to come up--like beets, carrots and lettuce? I plant my stuff in 5-foot-wide beds, so until the veggies come up, the weeds have a heyday!

    My Rosemary

My goodness, I am so jealous! I would be rolling in that plant like a dog, I love the stuff so much! Why can't I grow it? My favorite is roasted with olive oil, asparagus and new potatoes. Yum :)

What are your favorite unusual fruits or veggies?

:weee HAPPY EARTH DAY, EVERYBODY!!!! I will be growing the horned melons, the yellow/orange watermelon, a rainbow of carrots and tomatoes, romanesco cauliflower, purple kale, rainbow chard, popcorn, black radishes, purple asparagus, etc. We have white mulberries growing wild. I LOVE finding...

    Tomatoes Tomatoes, how many colors?

Don't forget black and brown! Plus green-and-yellow stripes, orange flesh with purple smudges, etc. It's amazing how many varieties fruits and veggies come in when you consider the 1 or 2 varieties we get from the store. The Cherokee purple and Brandywine are great. Haven't tried the others.

    Blue Potatos (1 picture added)

With potatoes, you actually want those dark green or purple eyes, not the pale, leggy ones you get from potatoes sprouting in the dark. We laid ours out on plastic lids in a sunny, cool basement bedroom and got wonderful dense sprouts. Good luck!

    ASPIRIN for plants

Some "organic schmanic" folks would say that exposure to pests (animal kingdom or germ) would be a great bolster to the plant's immune system ;)

Hardening Off (this is where I usually blow it)

Apparently there are mulitple ways to effectively harden off plants--so it shouldn't bee too intimidating :) I stick mine in shade a few hours the first day, then longer the next day or 2, then in filtered or morning sunlight a day or 2, then full sun and wind another day or 2, then plant...

Using garlic stalks to make garlic pesto

They're called scapes :) And they are delicious! Last year, I had about 500 garlic bulbs planted for basically my first time growing garlic. Then, they started sprouting out these long curved things at just the same time I read a Mother Earth News article on scapes! My CSA customers got thick...

Ingenious idea for adding space to garden
