    A Seed Saver's Garden

by the picture it looks like you already have an area mostly bare of weeds. so my recommendation if you want to keep that as garden space and not lawns is to keep weeding it (a stirrup hoe or tilling) until you get the replacement plants established. it's much easier to keep an area clear than...

    A Seed Saver's Garden

the tomato cages here are mainly to help keep the plants from putting all their tomatoes on the ground, we don't have the gardens mulched so if on the ground they are sitting in the dirt and it takes more time to wash them off after harvesting. it doesn't keep them all off the ground, but it helps.

    A Seed Saver's Garden

edges under control vs. edges bordering grassy areas or open areas that allow weeds to invade. the edges which are near gravel or other well defined borders along cement or gravel areas will not get many weeds and then can be weeded manually quite quickly, but it does require effort to...

2025 Little Easy Bean Network - Growers Of The Future Will Be Glad We Saved

it is up to the queen, if you've been getting rid of her workers and disrupting them enough she may move, but more likely you may have just killed off enough of the workers that she's just started more up and they will be back once they are old enough to start foraging again. if you'd dumped...

    A Seed Saver's Garden

i should have also said that with all the rocks and gravel around here having something softer to kneel on or sit on is also very nice.

    A Seed Saver's Garden

i use a ground pillow to kneel on or sit on, it saves the knees and legs. i don't always use it, but when i have to do a lot of close up work that will keep me around one spot for a while it's better for me.

What are You Eating from the Garden?

i've used the same recipe for ages. i cut off the ends of the beets and scrub them well so i don't have to peel them and cut them into chunks along with plenty of onions and then i steam them until they're done. adding vinegar, sugar and apple cider vinegar (no spices because nobody but me...

    Ducks ALIVE in 2025!

regarding peas and seed saving if you have chipmunks around they can raid the drying seeds so for some varieties you may find that you have to bring some pods in before they get fully dry or you may end up with little seeds to harvest... :(

    Concerned About Growing Old?

for those people who live down where fire ants are common if you can attract the kinds of flies which will harrass and use the ants as a place to deposit their eggs (yes, there are bugs that do prey upon fire ants - look up phorid flies) that might be an interesting project to see if you can...

i'm not a person who's grown a lot of different varieties of garlic and each one may be different so that some learning might be needed to figure out the best harvest time. the garlic i normally grow that i sent you i tend to let it get yellow leaves on about half the plant and then i think...

    stubbed toes and mud pies

this morning was really nice, yes it was hot and humid right from the start, but i didn't get nauseated and overheated like yesterday and was able to work on my garden tasks until i got tired enough to call it done. put the tomato cages on the plants (saving Mom that part, she puts the stakes...

    Your Weather, 2025

right on the edge of this storm coming by, not sure we're going to get anything from it, all i want is just a little bit, enough to keep things moist enough to keep them sprouting and growing, but not too much is needed for that. then there is another storm coming behind it on the same track...
