Thanks Davaroo. You just seem to have a really good handle on things...writing, thinking, gardening!

What have you learned from this years garden?

I have to follow Davaroo? (I feel so inadequate) Anyway.... 1. Don't plant if it seems too cold despite the calendar date. 2. Don't trust the chickens in the garden. 3. Raised beds are what I have been waiting for. 4. Trellis the cukes and tomatos before they get tremendous. 5. Mint gets...

    new here info needed

I have tried lots of different methods. What works best, I have decided in my laziness, is to just dump everything in a pile in a corner of the backyard. I have a shallow pit where my boys used to practice digging, and the compost all kind of gravitates to the pit. Then the chickens scratch...

Those look wonderful. My beets don't look like they are developing. I'm jealous.

    Gardening Mistakes

I think my biggest mistake was not trellising the cukes and 'maters when they were small. It seems they got too big overnight! I am just letting them sprawl for this year. My second worst mistake was not being on top of succession planting. I could have had a second crop of beans going already.

Mulch that chickens don't like to scratch in?

Has anybody found one? I have a little flower bed, on a slope, and they scratch the mulch out. I am getting tired of weeding. I don't want to fence. Any ideas?

what do you use for mulch in your garden?

Now that I figured out my chipper shredder, I use shredded oak leaves. I also recently collected three garbage bags of pine needles. I mulched my tomato plants. I was worried about the prickles, but these are long and soft. They smell really good in the sun.

You HAVE to LOOK at this! Amazing!

We have always had tons of toads in our yard, but now that I'm doing better at cleaning up the yard, I am afraid they won't be so numerous. We have lots of leaf litter, bushes, rocks and other hiding places. I think they have had lots of bugs to eat and lots of moist hiding places. Oh, I am...

    Hattie Got Me Hooked!!!

My husband usually gives in to my crazy ideas as long as 1. it doesn't cost too much and 2. he doesn't have to help. I end up doing almost everything myself, like masonry, carpentry, gardening, etc. He usually gives in and helps me with really heavy stuff.

    Dirty feet!!

Oh this has been an eternal problem for me. I always end up gardening in flip flops. The dirt gets ground into the callouses. I have resolved this year to always put on socks and sneakers. Oh, and speaking of the beach, a day at the beach really cleans up the feet and reduces the callouses.

    what is kale

I think I read once that kale is the most nutritious veggie there is. Saute garlic in olive oil, add kale, stir around, let it steam a bit with the cover on. You could probably eat very young leaves raw in salad.

    Hattie Got Me Hooked!!!

Hmmm. I can be pretty ambitious with the masonry work, but getting that arch looks hard. Why don't you just create a couple of pillars and then train roses or something over the top to create an arch?

Shrub needed that blooms in mid March in zone 6/7

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions! I guess I can think about it over the summer as I will probably have to wait until fall for planting now.
