In the spirit of recycling, what garden project are you most proud of?

I spent the better part of last summer completely digging up the previous owner's totally neglected rock garden. I pulled up every rock I could find. While digging, I unearthed a little section of concrete path, but it was below the soil line. So I used the rocks I dug up to line the path to...

    Herb party favors

Oh, definitely to take home and pot. My presentation wasn't anywhere near as good as chicken_boy's. Just stuck in a wet paper towel and then into a zip lock bag. We had taken some of my interested, but gardening challenged, in-laws on the garden tour and pointed out, in particular, the...

Black Walnut Fruits - Pix ** Updated 7/30

When we were kids, we just picked them up off the ground. Be careful, the husks around the actual nut, if you aren't familiar with black walnuts, will stain very badly. Really badly. They used to be used as a natural dye (and probably still are). And the nuts are one of the hardest nuts to...

Ahh, Beefy! You need to borrow my children. They are very good at redirecting Mom when she is hypnotized by the garden center at Home Depot!

    Herb party favors

We had a whole buncha people over for the fourth of July and I had put a bunch of mints, lemon balm, scented geraniums and basil in vases a week or so before. Several people went home very happily with herbal party favors! Just a suggestion for those who have too much.

    Wanted-I know this is ridiculus...but

I am pretty sure that the one I am remembering is staghorn sumac. Poison sumac, I was surprised to learn (just now on the internet), is far more poisonous than poison ivy, and grows almost exclusively in swampy or flooded ground. I don't know that I have ever seen it. And I hope I never do...

    Wanted-I know this is ridiculus...but

I want a sumac too for sentimental reasons! We had one next to my back porch when I was a kid. We played with the long sticks left when the leaves fell off. We had one come up in a bed and I was going to keep it and my husband insisted it be pulled out because he was worried that it would...

    Rooting geraniums

I love the way geraniums smell. They remind me of my childhood. when I was really small, maybe 7, I used to hang around with the really old lady next door and she showed me how to propagate geraniums. It was the first plant that I was taught how to grow.

    Buried compost vs. piled compost?

We used to have a bunny, and when my DH would clean out the cage, I would have him put the poopy litter in a new bed (or an old bed, not in current use). Very fertile beds result. Giving them 2-3 months sounds perfect.

    Favas: great cover crop!

I think I will plant favas in the raised bed I am building this summer. I don't plan to plant any food crops there until next year.
