Actually, I just did some today. It's a mix by Ball - Simple Creations Pickle Mix - Kosher Dill. Very easy and quick. It took me about 30 minutes from cutting to sealing.
No problem. I also have a friend who was going to remake the same sugar mixture over 4 times. (8 pts sugar x 4 nights) Thank goodness she called back before she bought all that sugar.
You never boil the cucumbers, just the same mixture that you drain from them each night for 4 nights. Keep your cucumbers in the jar. I just hold my fingers over the rim to pour the mixture from the jar. The only time I take mine out are when I put them in a seive to rinse the salt water and...
Just wanted to share this yummy recipe with ya'll since all those cukes are coming in. It is time consuming but well worth the effort.
Icicle Pickles (14 day pickles)
1 gal. cukes (sliced 1/4 inch thick)
1 cup pickle salt
1/2 gal. water
Mix salt & water, bring to a boil. Pour over cukes. Let...
Lots of bees on the Golden Jubilee Anise Hysop and tons of butterflies on the Zinnias, Butterfly Bushes and Coneflowers. It's wonderful just to stand by them and watch them fly all around you.
I found the greenhouse online. I searched for about 3 months until I decided on this one. It is a Rion Green Giant that measures 8x20. I think we paid about $2,500 for the complete kit. From Feb-April I grew over 1,000 tomato plants alone. It really performed well.
Have you ever thought about a worm bin? I have had one since the end of May and just added my 3rd tray. I bought mine off Ebay. They take up very little space and do not smell. Just go to Ebay and search "worm bin" or Google it. I've also seen some really great ideas on homemade worm bins that...
It's a beaut!! My dad is 82 and used one like it fo over 25 years in his garden. He's not a great "tinkerer" so he just replaced it - twice in 5 years. You're right - they don't make them like they used to.
We just had kraut and weenies for supper tonight and it was last year's kraut!
My dad is 82 and makes the best kraut ever and it's pretty easy.
This is what he does:
Pack your quart jar to within 1 inch of rim.
Put 1 teaspoon salt on top.
Pour enough boiling water to cover kraut.
Put lids on...
Never had a problem with cats, we have 3 dogs ;) For the birds and squirrels you could try hanging aluminum pie plates or plastic bags close to the tomatoes and cukes. They don't like the glare and the rustling from the breeze. I use bird netting over my strawberries to keep those critters out...
Hey chickhamm,
How long ago did you plant the cabbage? It takes a long time for it to start developing heads. Alot of big leaves are normal.
Have your squash started blooming yet? It will be a large yellow flower, very bright. Squash plants can get big before flowering. If you have a flower...
... today?
What needs to be done in your garden today?
I plan on picking more okra, cukes, tomatoes and peppers.
I'm sure some of my strawberry runners have rooted, so I'll lift those cups and start more. I pull weeds as I go and give them to the chickens.
I know my potted flowers will need...
I had the same problem with my Hot Banana Peppers and Yellow Squash this spring. Nothing but stem was left. I finally saw the little culprit - a little rabbit  that lived under the porch of the barn. I used bird netting over the squash and eventually the peppers leafed back out.
Our lettuce is long gone, along with the cabbage and broccoli. Next week I am starting more cauliflower, cabbage, brussels & broccoli for some early fall planters. I can't believe it's July already :th
