What did you can (freeze, dehydrate, preserve) today?

6 qrt. jars of blackberries for pie filling. When the time comes, I'll just add sugar to taste and minute tapioca to the jarred berries, put in a pie shell, dot with butter and top with a lattice crust.

    Canning corn...

I prefer to freeze my corn instead of canning it. I think that frozen corn tastes closer to fresh than canned does.

    Anaheim Peppers

We have six plants producing peppers here. We use them for chili rellenos as well as adding to scrambled eggs, chili and other stuff. We got them as starts from the local nursery. I guess I could save seeds for you if you want me to.

    SQUIRRELS!

We got a molded plastic owl with a bobbing/rotating head and glowing yellow eyes. Since putting this in the garden there have been no ground squirrels bothering my garden and I found a dead rat 3 feet away from the owl in a direct line of sight, like it saw the owl and died of a heart attack...

    ? about cleaning sealed jars

OK, so its time to remove the rings, wash the outside of the jars and label for storage on the pantry shelf. I have a few particularly sticky jars of B&B pickles and blackberry pie filling. I don't have a problem washing the outside of the jars before I remove the ring, but am a little leary...

    Weird "squash"

I got them as starts from a local nursery here. These squash "nubbins", as I call them, look more like gourds with warts than squashes, although I know they are related.

    Chickens and new sprouts

I used 1" pvc pipe, bent them over the growing area and stuck them into the ground of the rectangular garden bed. I then covered this with chickenwire, effectively caging off my sprouting plants. It looked like a chickenwire quansit hut. I also took 2 pvc pipes, crossed them together in the...

    Weird "squash"

I have found a couple of these things on my crook-necked squash plants. They are so much darker than the normal squashes and never get bigger than 3". Can anybody tell me why the plant produces them?

    Pics of my garden

Ya, I'm in the PNW, just 10 miles or so west of Roseburg, OR. I'm all prepared to cover my whole tomato bed with pvc pipe hoops and plastic in case it turns cold too soon for them all to ripen. I think I planted too many in the bed, at least 20 plants, and they've all done really well. I'm...

Pickle recipes handed down in my family, here for you

I keep my brine in a gallon vinegar bottle and just heat up what I need for the current batch of dill pickles. As for not using fresh dill, I didn't have any either and used dill weed from my spice rack. I used 1 T. per pint jar, which gave good flavor, but my 2year old grandson, who loves...

    Making tomato sauce

I've always been told not to cook anything with tomato in a cast iron pot, so I never have done.

    What did you pick today?

Sad is the day when we must stand guard with shotguns over our vegetable gardens because of punks. :(

    Cantaloupe

I've never tried this myself, but just might this year. It is said to be the perfect use for a slightly underripe melon. CANTALOUPE PICKLE 1 medium underripe cantaloupe 1 qt. vinegar 2 c. water 1 tsp. mace 2 (3") sticks cinnamon 2 Tblsp. ground cloves 4 c. sugar * Peel cantaloupe and cut...
