I'm somewhat of a seed-aholic, too. I do pretty good until I get in a store where there is a seed rack...haha...then I can't help myself. I had seeds that I'd had for years and finally this spring cleaned out the seed bucket... :-( :tools
So many wonderful reasons...I have to agree with all of them. I have a very crude wooden sign on which I painted the word "sanctuary" -- it hangs on the garden post - that pretty much sums it up...wonderful fresh food, exercise, time to meditate and commune with my Maker and the list goes on...
Oh yes, that will certainly work....you sure needed it today - winds 40+, temp. 99 degrees, and lots of dirt in Texas! I used some 3 gallon plastic buckets, cut out the bottoms and turned then over my tomatoes. Looking like nites in the 30s again this week. If you don't like weather today...
Oh my, stano.....it will be 85 here today....will be putting out the remaining tomato plants and getting ready for planting squash, cukes, beans and much more; however, it did frost a few nights ago and looks like it got my cherry tomatoes - will have to find some more. Good luck with all...
Me too - they are very sturdy plants and getting them a little deeper just helps support them too. Good luck with the eggplant. Our 3 plants were SO prolific last summer, we still have plenty in the freezer and probably won't plant more this year. Love that deep fried eggplant!! :tools
So, gardening friends, I see we all have to deal with the winds at some point. I agree about the windbreaks....it's hard out here. Boilerman, I like what you have done with the clear bags....probably will give that a try. :tools
Why in the world do I get so excited about gardening in NW Texas? A few beautiful warm days and I can't wait to get started.....then those terrifying winds start!!! Today the winds blew at 45 MPH and dust rolled....so glad my tender tomato plants were still in the house. Oh wait! There's...
We ordered from Dixondale this year...big, healthy looking plants! When we visited our local grocery store, they had Dixondale onion plants for sale -and some of the farm supply stores in our area have Dixondale Farms onions as well! Can't wait to see how they do!
Has anyone had luck with Athena cantaloupes? I'm in zone 7 (N. Cen. Tex) and I purchased this seed last year. Didn't get to plant any but planning to this spring. :tools
Has anyone had experience with ordering from Gurney? We have used them off and on for many years, but last year we were quite disappointed in quality....then later read some bad reviews...that they are not owned by the same folks from years back. Anyway, this year I just purchased all my seed...
Sunday I planted Salad Bowl leaf lettuce. Onion plant order arrived today, and if it doesn't start raining tomorrow, they will go in the ground tomorrow or Thursday.
We usually put out our feeders around April 1 and don't recommend the pre-mix hummer food either. It has artificial coloring, plus it gums up in the feeders sometimes. 1 part sugar to 4 parts water, boiled and cooled, no coloring for our feeders. Ours hang in the sun, as well, so they need to...
Good Morning! Thanks for the good strawberry info. But how about new plantings? I'm in zone 7 and fairly new at strawberries. If I can get them, is it way too early to get them in the ground now? I would also like to have some container grown ones in the front yard, so that our 3 year old...
I agree that spring is very near! On our little farm just this weekend we heard the beautiful sounds of the Cardinal's spring song! We have lots of them year 'round, but the song of spring is so distinct. Love all the Mr. Big Reds and their "ladies with the red lipstick"!:coolsun
