As of last night we're up to 70 quarts. I think we are done. There are still some left on the plants, but I think we're going to just enjoy the rest of them fresh. My DW is starting on applesauce this week and peaches will be in soon. We have by far surpassed the amount we thought we would...
I planted some of them a few years ago. They were called "Salsa Delights". They weren't hot at all. They tasted similar to a bell, but with a more grassy taste. I would try one now to see if they're hot. If they're not hot, then they're not cayennes. I would guess with the name you said...
Thanks for all the input. I have decided on the Winter Rye. It seems to be the best fit for my need and is also about the cheapest. I will also be able to feed some to my chickens if I choose. It's seems like a great candidate to "kill 2 birds w/ 1 stone." I ordered a 50lb bag yesterday. I...
I forgot to add about mulching. That is an excellent prevention method. If you cover the ground, it makes it harder for the fungus to reach the plants.
I was cutting up some japs for salsa a few years ago, and I needed to go pee. I washed my hands prior to peeing, but it wasn't enough. I'm a male, and you think your hands are burning! Wow! Never again. If necessary, I now use the hands free method now.
You need some bees. Might sound funny, but it's most likely the reason. Bees are the number one pollinator for pumpkins, squash, ect.. I have some relatives who raise pumpkins and had the same problem. This year they bought 3 hives of bees. They are hoping it fixes the problem. It has been...
Yes it is a soil fungus. If you notice, it almost always starts at the bottom and works its way up. When ever it rains or you water, the water bounces up and gets the fungus on the vegetation.
I have tried something this year that has really helped. As my plants grow, I trim off all...
Most Back Yard Chicken Forum members will warn you chickens are very addictive, so beware. It starts out innocent enough, but before you know it, you hooked.
ETA: I had corn there last year, that's why I put the poo shavings there, as I figured corn used a lot of the available Nitrogen.
Just add a little salt to the filtered water used to fill the jars. Bring water to a boil, pour over snapped beans in the sterilzed jars. Put in pressure canner...
We have a bumper crop of beans this year. So far we have canned 56 quarts and they're still coming. I have four 30' rows. I have picked five 5-gallon-buckets so far, and my wife and kids have also picked some. I have been picking them about every other day. I think the biggest factor for...
I have an area on my property I want to use for garden next year. The soil is very clay heavy in this area. I have read a few places on the net, that a cover crop can improve soil condition.
Does anyone have a good suggestion for a cover crop that would help improve soil. One I am...
Yes, eggshells will work. I save mine for garden use. I put all shells in boiling water for a few minutes to rid all bacteria then air dry. I put them in the blender to create a powder. I apply some around my plants and work in slightly. I don't get end rot on anything anymore.
I think they do better. The back breaking picking was my initial reason for trellising. I have discovered the cukes will be longer and straighter. Before tressiling, I would often miss a few, then when you do discover them, it's almost too big to eat. With the trellis, I never miss any. It...
