She's out of June, the smallest of the Dorper/Katahdin cross ewes...she was the last born, near the middle of May. I'll raise her up a bit to see what she becomes, but I don't know if I'll keep her for long. The Dorper adds a lot of heft but it also shortens as well as adds more wool to the...
Hauling compost from the sheep pen and placing it on the asparagus bed. Also planting a lot more asparagus.
Trying to chicken proof the garden also....it's a process. Been doing this for years now.
An update on changes in the soils here:
I'm thrilled to report an increase in clover in the yard~in types, size, size of bloom and overall spread of it in the yard now. I've never seen anything like this before at this place. The trampling, pooping, peeing and also the actual grazing...
Finished a raised bed and planted it with rhubarb. Will likely shove a few other things in there as time goes by. Also planted rhubarb in one of the flower beds that gets full sun and has a fresh layer of chicken compost.
Secured the top of the garden fence with 2 strands of tight wire to...
I think so too, so their time in the pond would be limited to when they are in the garden doing pest control. They've already introduced so much bacteria in there that the spring is green and stinky. Placing a flake of hay in there today to help combat the algae. Yesterday's rains will have...
Finally getting things in the garden, but battling the heat and humidity. Got spuds in, also squash, pumpkins, maters, radishes, Mammoth sunflowers and also the more ornamental ones, with beans planted next to those. Will plant some beans along the mater trellis also.
Next is to finish...
Not quite that big of a water supply, but it should keep a small pond/spring full....I hope to dig it 3 ft deep and widen it out to 6 ft by 4 ft.
I started out digging this to divert the water from around a young apple tree's root system...it was standing in water all the time and I think...
Just now got the cultivator fixed and running, so the gardening begins today. I know...extremely late...but it's better than never at all. Finally got a break in the rains enough to get in there and cultivate a bit and the soil looks good.
Doing things a little differently this year so...
Yes, pictures.....since you live in one of the most beautiful valleys in this nation, you could show us some pics. I used to live near Franklin, Wv, so just over the mountain from your location. Stunning views, huge and beautiful farms, verdant and absolutely lovely right now.
Are the trees you are planting the type that will provide food for bees? The invasive trees and vines you are removing are food for bees and can be coppiced to control overgrowth if you are of a mind to do so. If you have a lot of those and you remove them all, that's removing a massive food...
Bay, your pantries, freezers and such will be bursting at the seams! And such good, clean food, too....must make you feel really good! You are one hard working woman! Will you be eating any of your lambs this season?
Working on the garden today.....putting in more spuds than normal, both...
I hope to clean up on free roosters come fall....will keep them for a bit to clean up the flavor of the meat with some FF and then they will be canned up.
I agree. After working away from home for most of my life, the chance to STAY home and do work I love is like a perpetual vacation for me. I love the chores!
:hugs No worries, Ducks. I had to get rid of the donkey, so she wasn't worth much to me after all, was she?
Horses be be useful on a homestead of folks use them for riding, working, plowing, therapy, etc. Lots of folks have horses for pasture ornaments but they are useful animals if one...
I love that story, Bay! Willow's hooves needed a trim and one was distorted from some injury or infection in the past, but they weren't too bad....had some thrush, though. I couldn't wait to trim them and give them a good clean out. The fella that bought her has been doing his own farrier...
We don't have that around here, that I know of. Not many flowers at all on our land except dandelions, clover, bluets, mint, autumn olive, honeysuckle, multiflora rose. All good eats for sheep.
