    Back to Eden Gardening

Pretty much the whole garden gets shade towards evening, but not usually until around 5 pm. I'm going to plant some starts this year around the cabin, which will give them afternoon shade, morning sun. We've had some really wet spring and summers, but this last summer we had a drought time...

    Back to Eden Gardening

That's what they were in last year...basically layers of different compostables~leaves, hay, chicken compost, etc. Full sun all day long. Do you think if I added perlite to the raised bed compost that I could keep the rhubarb from being overly wet all the time?

    Back to Eden Gardening

That's the problem...where I planted them was just full of all those things, well composted and rich, about 2 ft thick that composted down further to around 10 in. thick. They didn't even make contact with our clay soils last year, but still got some kind of fungal infection all the same and...

    Back to Eden Gardening

Will do! Bought some Rudbeckia, bee balm, echinacea(all root stock) and butterfly bush today....the beginning of my perennial garden. Will also be buying way more asparagus and rhubarb this year, hoping to get large beds of each established....both are favorites of mine. Will need to get...

    Back to Eden Gardening

Worked on the garden fence the past few days, extending the size of the garden to encompass a few apple tree saplings. Also reinforcing the existing fencing of deer netting and rabbit wire, with some free skids~heavy duty 10 ft. x 4 ft pallets. Unwieldy and heavy though they be, they were free...

What Do You Prefer, Bush Beans or Pole Beans?

That's what my mom says...exactly. The other beans just can't compare, has even said other varieties taste like chemicals, of which I use none in my gardening. It's what she grew up with, as has the rest of my family, so they won't eat anything else I've planted. I can grow Fortex here like...

What Do You Prefer, Bush Beans or Pole Beans?

We like half runners and all the family swear they taste better than all others we've tried. So, what ain't broke, we don't fix. They grow well here, yield big time, take up very little space in the garden and are reliable. Bush beans always get dirt splashed up on them, tend to hold...

Cats using garden as litter box

If you have good, loose soil with good drainage and absorption, the rains will take care of your current cat fecal load. I've been gardening in cat poop soil since I was 10 yrs old and it's never been an issue. Adds fertility to the soil just like any other manure. Mulch with hay~not straw~...

    there she goes

:hit Awwwwww! I feel your pain....looks like it was a nice ol' truck. I recently sold a much loved vehicle and I knew it was going to a bad home....sort of felt like sending a good old reliable dog off to a place where I knew he would be abused. I still feel bad about letting that car go to them.

    Horse Manure (Trail Gold)

Great story!!! I love old farmers and can't help but miss this dying breed. Been studying up on farmers doing regenerative farming and how valuable the dung beetle has become. Some good info on dung beetles and dewormers....something to consider when getting horse manure from farmers is how...

Whatever you do, don't get rid of that honeysuckle....your goats will love it and it's really good nutrition for them.

Xerocles head in the clouds and feet firmly in the mud.

That might not deter your deer, especially if you have a heavy population. A hot wire about knee high works well, though, and you don't have to "bait" the line with peanut butter at all....deer are naturally curious and will explore it with their nose and get a zap. We used the same when we...

Xerocles head in the clouds and feet firmly in the mud.

Nah, that was someone else. I merely stated that Runner Ducks could help with pests that hide in the hay. I already had slugs in the garden before I used hay, from using seed potatoes from my brother's garden, who trucked in tons of mushroom mulch that was laden with slug eggs. I haven't...

    Worse than new.

Hey, it's either me or Seedcorn who will bug you, so buckle down. I'm an old woman, so I don't have time to dawdle. ;) Life is shorter for us oldsters. :gig
