yeah, you definitely want to get the right kind, i've seen it called Mother of Thyme, Creeping Mother of Thyme or Coccineus Thyme but i would not buy any until i saw it flowering to make sure it is the right color. there's a lot of variations out there and the names don't seem to be used...
no sprays are used here for bugs. the birds, other animals, spiders, etc. all get their shot at eating what they can find.

the acidity is what helps keep it safe in storage or canning. if you won't be canning it and freezing it instead or eating right away that factor may not be important to you...
i recall quail being used for this sort of thing. i've never kept quail or chickens to know for sure.
we normally do not have ticks here often but with the deer wandering through at times we've had them show up. i haven't seen any this year so far.
you can discourage them by using hardware cloth a few feet high around the area you want to protect the most. if they can't easily get to it they may go someplace else. sure it will not prevent them from getting in there entirely but it may help.
