for strawberries the worst predators were the chipmunks - birds might get some of them, but not nearly as many.
in recent years i'm not sure if it was raccoons or groundhogs that would also get into the strawberries, however since i stopped growing them i've not seen any fur trapped by the...
the old strawberry patch is weeded but not leveled, i may wait until spring to do that.
also did get the garlic planted and some other puttering around done.
made more progress today on cleaning up the old strawberry patch. i should be able to finish it up tomorrow in about an hour to an hour and a half.
i took a few pictures of the gardens out there that i've put up plus the few still left to go yet
i also took pictures of the soil profile of the...
they need a fence they can tilt up at night to let the leaves blow, but they put it down in the morning on school days to keep the children under control (an illusion i know, ... :) )
i've used a variety of methods over the years but my favorite is by hand shelling as then i can do selections based upon how easy it is to get the beans out of the shells or how many have stickers (little bits of the pod stuck to them) or ...
if the beans are super dry stepping on them may...
we are now into chances of hard frosts overnight for some days and last night we did have a hard frost.
i better get that garlic planted sometime soon... :)
i've seen all sorts of beans like that through the years. from changing conditions during the time when the beans are filling the pods. especially with larger beans and our poorer and more difficult soils in some gardens. it is why i like to plant smaller beans so they have a better chance of...
not a bad day out there at all, not too hot, not too cold.
i went out to weed the old strawberry patch which has a lot of oxalis in it and plenty of other weeds too. it is the worst one i have left to get done (others still to go). first though i scraped another big garden to make sure none...
yes, Venda is like that too, better to shell before they dry down completely. this remind me that i have some Provider to shell out at some time too. those seem to be larger beans but the pods are similar in how tough they are and how much work to get the seeds out and clean.
after living with someone who kept nine birds of various kinds i would not want to do that again. they were way too noisy for me (especially in the morning!).
sorry to hear you were under the weather and glad to hear you are feeling better now. :)
yay for rain! :) that will help out your pastures and sheepies. :)
we had been dry for a long time, enough that a lot of the trees have already dropped their leaves due to the stress from the drought...
it is better to have it done before the weather really turns. ours went out in the middle of the worst part of this past winter and our regular furnace repair company couldn't get to it right away so we found someone else who could. i didn't want to be running those tiny electric heaters any...
