What are You Eating from the Garden?

More berries! I made some black+red currant syrup today. It is special because all the black currant and gooseberry plants were propagated from cuttings in 2018 (from our neighbor's plants in Cologne). This is the first year we have a decent harvest - good enough for me to bring out the steam...

    Phaedra's 2025 Journey

The last day of 5-day off, time flies. I finished most of the summer pruning and weeding, the rest should be done in another few days. Years ago I bought a black elderberry plant (Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’) - the flowers and foliage are both charming. Before I transplanted it, I removed some...

    Phaedra's 2025 Journey

A full-time gardener day - I guess I worked in the garden for at least 5 hours. I drank about 3L water, several cups of ice coffee, and half chilled melon  Anyway, pruning, mowing, weeding, feeding, mulching -- all kinds of corners, all kinds of work and the reward? I ordered...

    Phaedra's 2025 Journey

I have 5-day off this week, and would like to take 5-day off every month from now on. As the weather is mild and lovely, I stayed in the garden for a couple of hours. First, I harvested scallion from the water feature bed. Just a few weeks time, this bed looks gorgeous already. For me, it's...

    Experiments, observations, and lessons learned

I do not care what they will do next season, as I no longer expect them (especially hybrid varieties) to come back and treat them now as annual. After they die back, I pull them out and pile them in the wildlife garden corner. If they come back years later, that's gift. :)

    Rose thread + poll!

The poet's wife I cut them back as the overall structure isn't robust, and most of the flowers are now in a vase. The fragrance is pretty elegant.

    Coffee

Just made something lovely today - a Focaccia with only 5 ingredients: flour, water, salt, dried parsley, and mozzarella cheese—plus our sourdough starter, which is nothing more than flour and water given time and care. A little dip of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar brings it all...

    Gone to the Dogs

Well well, let's disclose who is the lucky new resident! One of the online nurseries I like has end of season offer for 60% discount, so I finally got 6 clumps of Agapanthus 'Black Buddhist'. So, this hole is dug by Bobo, and I used the soil dug out by moles to fill the gaps, then it rains to...

    Phaedra's 2025 Journey

Great! I didn't realize how useful a trimmer can be until these two years and can't live without it now. We bought many devices and batteries from a same brand, pretty handy. Especially during rainy days, trimmers can work well while mowers can't. DH got a heavy duty one, and I got a...
