Camellias should be good choices for you, Dahlia.
Wikipedia says southern Japan but in areas up to 3,000 feet elevation. The information made it sound like you may have to raise the pH of your soil.
Camellias are beautiful plants. Even tea plantations are pretty.

It's 15⁰f (-9C).
The Weather Service tells us that our December average has been 10⁰f warmer than normal. This is personally a little disturbing. Of course, outdoor activities have been easier with this move 500 - 1000 miles south without having gone anywhere!

This very much reminds me of the statue in front of the Canadian Broadcasting Center offices in Toronto. Glenn Gould was my grandfather's cousin. This is a Wikipedia picture of the statue (with a visiting friend ;)).
