This is my first attempt. Normally I just direct seed, but I was dealing with seeds that were 7 to 12 years old, so I wanted to try and pre-sprout them. It didn't work all that great for me. The sprouting part worked great, but when I took the sprouted beans and planted them, hardly any come up...

@Zeedman These are Sierra Madre. You generously supplied me with my start way back in the garden web days. It's been several years and I wanted to grow them out to refresh my seed.

@aftermidnight Annette this is my Pienky Jas. The one with the string. We attached a board to the side of the bed, I think this will work. It's about 8' high. As for the rest of the picture. These mutant greens were picked 3 days ago! You can watch these rascals grow!

Don't know if I have told you the story on this tomato or not, but this is my baby this year. I've had the seed since 2006 and it was sent to me labeled as Frosty Pink Plum Heirloom. I don't remember who sent it to me, but over the years I have tried to find information on it without success...

@digitS' I so wished I would have known about saving seed back then. All my family gardened, but they just went down to the feed store and bought seeds every year. I didn't start collecting & saving seed until the early part of this century.

Yes, it's used as both a place to water and also if you need to side dress. I don't go to the trouble to do all my tomatoes that way, but it's more of a tradition because of being a youngster back then and learning something new from someone I watched on TV and got to meet.

@digitS' Oh I also meant to mention to you to please maintain your Granny's seed. A lot of the crap that is sold as Porter's these days isn't the original Porter's.

In all seriousness, growing tomatoes here is sort of gamble. If you put them out too early and you get a cool spell, they don't grow as well as if you had waited. You wait too long and it gets too hot to set blooms till fall. Still, I enjoy growing them. I don't grow too many run of the mill...
