I have found that peanut shells take a really long time to break down. Whenever we screen our compost out, there's always peanut shells left behind. But, we still compost them anyway, because I'm sure they eventually break down. And our chickens love to eat them when they scratch around in it.

I think you had the right idea adding more newspaper. It does sound like you need more "browns" in your compost, like straw or dried shredded leaves. We turn our pile frequently, and if it seems that it's getting too wet, we add some sticks to improve air circulation. I don't think the...

We use a paper grocery bag for tissues, napkins, and other paper products, and then we bury them in the compost pile. It actually doesn't take very long for it to break down, especially if the pile is really "hot."

We have one of those too! It is so much nicer than plastic containers. Those always end up cracking and breaking on us, they just don't last as long as ceramic. And the ceramic containers look nicer and keep the rotting food smell to a minimum. I really like that carbon filter.
