How awful. That has never happened to me, thank God. (All my birds are in a pen because of the hawks around here.) There is a member on SSF who lost ALL his chickens due to a weasel (if I remember correctly). I just can't imagine it. :( I hope all the rest of yours remain safe.

Oh yes! I was complaining one morning in an email to vfem that my beans just would NOT sprout...I went out at lunch time & 3 had popped up since breakfast! (I guess they heard me complaining about them.) Sneaky little suckers! :lol:

I don't think it's the seed; most of them sprouted & actually the green tops are HUGE. They just didn't develop the red bulbs. I don't think sewing continuously would work this far south, unless I can find another spot for them where it's cooler. But what do I know? :P

I do the same thing, nachoqtpie! When things start sprouting, I go out several times a day to look. :D

This is my first year for radishes (since kiddie-hood, anyway). I only planted (from seed) 20 or so. I probably got 4-5 actual radishy-looking bulbs, the rest look like rhubarb! :P So what did I do wrong? Why didn't they develop bulbs instead of just thick red stalks? If I can figure out where...

Right there with ya, nachoqtpie. My old bones can't handle the cold & snow anymore. :P I try to take a 20 minute walk every day, & when it gets like this I have to head out no later than 8am...otherwise I come back drenched. :/ But, my garden is lovin' it!! :D

FWIW, I have a hen who lays while she's in the tractor...I just find the eggs sitting in the grass. :) They are only in the tractor during the day, & go into the coop at night.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering, if you hill around the stem so that taters will form underneath...so theorectically, the taller the plant & the higher you hill, the more taters will form...? Until the flowers form, at least. Do I have that right? :)

Thanks Pat - I think I get it now! ;) I had to buy a bale of wheat straw to hill/mulch the dang things, they were gettin' so tall & I ran out of soil to use! :/

Hmmmf. Well, does this mean all the taters grow directly from the roots underground? In which case, what's the point of doing all the hilling above-ground? I is confused! :hu

So...do the taters actually start growing from the stem, the part that is buried under the mulch/straw/soil? I noticed the plants have "branches" going out from the main stem, but then also small leaves sticking out along the main stem as well. I was wondering if that's where I'll find the...

My tater experiment continues... ...and my Red Pontiac plants are ready to bolt (if that's the right word when speaking of tater plants forming flowers). Is that a good thing or bad thing? Does that mean they're done growing, so I can stop hilling? :P I could probably mulch them another 6...

Maybe you could print up & post a sign saying something like "This property uses surveillance cameras"...it might make people think twice. (Or not...so many people have no morals & just don't care these days.) :/
