    Hardening off tomatoes

    This year I cut the tops off of milk jugs, put a stick in the handle hole, and put my tomato seedlings in the ground about two weeks early. I'm really pleased with the results. I live in Maine so frost was a major concern;the moisture retention was an added bonus.

    Composting chicken litter that has DE in it

    Although food grade DE may not harm earthworms, it is harmful to beneficial insects like honeybees and probably lady bugs. My plan is to compost shavings and droppings seperately to till into the soil, and use my other compost pile for top dressing.
