I don't think Doty India #1 is going to make it to mature seed. Pods are barely started, and seeds were planted quite early for my location. Just too late for my garden. The large pods at the lower left corner are a neighboring bean variety.
It sounds burdensome. But how can a tariff be assigned to a parcel that has no value assigned, or price charged, by the sender or recipient? Will tariffs be charged on gifts sent to family or friends across the border(s)?
I'm growing this bean this year and already have dry pods. I also have Dow Purple Pod and Purple Pod Pole as network beans. All very similar growth and appearance. The network beans just a bit behind Trionfo Violetto.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I must have just lucked out, that my first exposure was so successful. The idea of a bean with a longer window for fresh eating is appealing to me. I guess I can be satisfied with the handful that have worked in my garden to date. 😊
I've developed an interest in the Appalachian varieties, and have had mixed results. Last season I grew Headricks Greasy Cutshort, Dean Family Greasy Cutshort, Tennessee Mountain Climber, and Old Time Golden Stick. They all matured with room (season) to spare. In fact, Tennessee Mountain Climber...
This is good to know. I obtained Succotash seed in a swap this year, and will probably try to grow it next year.
Edit: (Oops, I actually have Succotash growing this year. It has blossoms and immature pods at this time.)
I'm currently growing the network bean "Rose". Its development is way...
Thanks for responding to my question. I understand the difference between 'for sale" and "network". But in the priority list posted by Blue-Jay on 1/1/2025, and referenced in Vanalpaca's post #341, the first 8 varieties are listed neither in the network nor sales list. Also not in the Will...
Blue-Jay, please tell me about the priority list. I requested my network beans before the list was finalized and shared this year. Having been reminded of the list (Thank you, Vanalpaca!), I did some reviewing of both the network and the for sale bean lists on your website. Some priority...
Well, I took the plunge. I'm in mid-Michigan also, and forecast says no frost for the next 8-10 days, at least. My network beans are all planted in the garden. The rest of my pole varieties will be in this afternoon. I'm unlikely to get to the edamame today, but probably tomorrow. Tomatoes and...
Regarding beans and legacy, the goal for an existing, extensive collection to move forward as a single entity is ideal. But as commented by others, there are challenges to achieving that by individuals. I think duplication has huge advantages, and I will try to share every variety that I grow...
I recently participated in an online seed swap through Garden.org. I shared 98 samples of beans (that's all I offered) in return for 85 samples of everything from beans and basil to peppers, tomatoes, native wildflowers, and on and on. There's a slick software system on the website to facilitate...
I can't comment on stringless. I didn't eat any fresh. I can say, these beans were the earliest to mature of all the varieties I grew, by a significant margin. Once I'd harvested the main flush of dried pods, the vines continued to produce a slow trickle of pods, enormous at the stage just...
I'm quite envious. I haven't had anything to shell in weeks. I used to have bags to last me through the winter. Since retirement, I keep up with stuff better and consequently have no beans to keep my hands occupied in front of the T.V.
I would love to try the San Fiacre! I'm exploring Romano type beans in 2025, and have always had a soft spot for the patron saint of gardening/agriculture. No one has it listed on SSE. I'll private message you.
