Surely, navigators months out on the open oceans ~ years! ~ would have some idea of what the planets were doing, relative to the Earth. And, how reasonable it could be that the Earth was circling the Sun, rather than the idea of some caveman that it was the other way around!

I mean, Columbus had made it to America in 1492. Copernicus published his thesis in 1543. It's okay to apologize in the 20th century but nothing in the heavens stood still between 1633 and then despite the knuckleheads' efforts in the 17th century.

I was in a doctor's waiting room this morning reading about a local shelter for abused women from Christian homes. Before you recoil - understand that the director of the shelter is the wife of a Christian pastor. She is guiding the abused wives of the "good guys."
