Well, at almost 70 years old with emphysema and a heart condition I'm sure not gonna take it up. I think I'll go with 24" deep.

You can make it work leaving the asphalt. Use plenty of cardboard over it. Make sure there is drainage at the bottom of your beds. Lightweight almost pure compost is easiest to work with. Don't overdo it all at once.
