This may be wayyyyy off, but it kind of looks like a magnolia seed pod.

Its a magnolia seed pod. I hate magnolias. Sure, they are evergreen, but they drop their big leathery leaves all summmmmmmmmmer longggggg....I used to pick up 100's every other day or so, on the dinner plate magnolia in our front yard in San Jose. And those seed pods too. Good thing they don't like it up here where we live now - too cold in the winter for them.

A magnolia seed pod, I remember playing with those in the backyard in Oklahoma as a kid. I miss those magnolia flowers!
