An End to the Greenhouse Season

I am ready for it!!!

But, with a standing greenhouse, there's never a real end to the season. Besides, it will be a good place for the basil for another month - I suppose. Tomatoes are already pinned down to the lawn and will be transplanted out this week. Peppers can go out next week.

Here is what I'm up against today: It is only 59F outdoors but there is now a good deal of sun. The wind gusts are above 30 mph.

The vent in both the west and east wall is open. These are fairly small. I rely on fans to move the air so with only about 1 ft of vent in each wall, the building isn't open very much but -- it's not QUITE enuf! I may have to turn on 1 of the fans or, crack the door, or sumthin'!

Howsomeever! If the wind gusts go up to 35mph or 40mph!!!! Too, much wind! And, the temperature in there is climbing to 80.

I think it will be okay. The wind isn't "supposed" to get any worse and 80 will be fine. But dang! There's beginning to be so much air movement thru that thing - it's starting to get kind of chaotic in there! Still looking for that tornado??

We have almost everything out! I too am ready to be done with opening and closing doors, turning on fans, watering, watering....

BUT I think I should have waited a little longer on my maters. Oh well, I hope the seed is a strain that is more cold hardy! SAving them seeds...

I was so late starting everything... I will be using mine for awhile longer. I figure I might as well wait until the seedlings are big and healthy, before I put them out in the cruel world. Tomatoes out this weekend, though.

Well, the gusts hit 38mph before dropping a bit.

The outdoor temperature didn't rise above 61 and the clouds moved in during mid-afternoon so I didn't have to figure out how to open it up anymore without the wind lifting it off the foundation !

There must be some critical "tipping point" that would be a combination of things. I suppose, I worry about it too much since it hasn't moved an inch in 15 years . I can always button it up tight but baking the plants would kind of defeat the purpose of having a greenhouse.

My tomatoes and peppers are experiencing tough love. I don't have a greenhouse :/ so they've been outside for a few weeks and only moving into the garage when it looks like a frost will visit.

They will probably never get over the psychological damage and have abandonment issues as well as being stunted.
Fortunately the high winds aren't so much of an issue here on the property thanks to the abundant trees screening it for us.
They've been getting the rain, sun and stiff breezes, but this afternoon they look pretty good. Cheerful almost.

I hope to get them all in the ground this Saturday.

Ohhhhhhh, i dunno, i really like to bake my plants in the greenhouse... Miraculously everything is still alive even tho my thermometer registered 121* in there one day. Yipes!!

I'm leaving the greenhouse and plants up to their own devices for three days this weekend...i'm a little nervous. I'll have to leave the side vents open pretty far, so that it doesnt get too hot during the day, but then friday night it says low of 28. Scary! I think everything would be ok if i had it closed up, but we're not going to be here to do that, so... They'll just have to be a bit chilly!

Hah, i just looked at wunderground again, yesterday it said 28, today it says 36!! I SWEAR i dont smoke crack!

Greenhouse in summer:


All vents and windows open

All fans and blowers on

Shade cloth up

All doors wide open during the day

All hoses at the ready

Hot intolerant plants outside

Seed sowing for things like Pansies, Primroses, Winter crops, Columbines, etc.

Nooo!! On this side of the mountains, it should be above 40, Friday night! Please!

Of these, I have 1 tomato plant and 1 only - with no hope of replacement: Casey's Pure Yellow, Dr. Wyche's, Earl of Edgecombe, Gary O' Sena. (This is the 3rd year that I have tried to grow Gary O'Sena.)

I could probably replace the 1 Orange Minsk and the 1 Kellogg's Breakfast but if I lose both of the Tigerellas & the 2 Sandul Moldovans, that's it. The 3 tomatoes that my grandmother grew beginning during the Great Depression - if I lose those, Good Heavens!! She would probably come down here to Earth and bonk me on the head with her knuckles! I've got seed from earlier years, but still!

One of my big finds from 2011, Woodle Orange, would come down to 1 saved plant, held in reserve. And, what about the "Mystery Girl?" Well, I guess that since I gave 2 of the 4 plants away - I could show up in somebody's garden during the dark of night - and, steal them back!

Maybe I should invest in Greek bonds or Facebook stock. Yeah, trying to maintain this plant portfolio puts a heck of a strain on me . . !
