This spring I am putting in a hot tub. Problem is Gladys Kravits (remember her from bewitched?) lives across the street. All summer she sits on her front porch and watches me when I am outside. I need a fast growing vine that willn't be messy. Trumpet vine seems like a good choice. When I googled it wikipedia said it is also called cow itch vine, that sent up a red flag. Does the vine give you a rash like poison ivy? Any other fast growing vine for zone 5 grapes are out don't want hot tub to turn into gaint vat of wine lol.

I put out one by light pole. They grow fast, birds love them. Hummingbirds nest in mine. Only down side is they will send up shoots everywhere so you have to kill them off or be over run with them.

No rashes from mine.

Nyboy, I've had them in the past. I got rid of them because they were just to invasive over here. They were probably not planted in the best spots. Our local nursery has one that covers an entire wall of their second floor deck that is a coffee shop. They are beautiful and grow very fast. The hummingbirds also love them. Here they are evergreen, I don't know about in your zone.

I believe there are 2 vines that go by the name of trumpet vine. Ours is the one that only comes in orange.

Thanks guys i know they can be a problem . I am hoping the cement patio on one side and the lawnmower on other side will keep in check.

Lawn mower keeps mine in check. If you were close I could give you a bunch of starts.

Though they are beautiful after 30 years mine are so hard to control. They are really not fast for the first 10 years. Then there is no stopping them.

You might be better off with an evergreen hedge. There are many types with limited height. That is the only thing I can think of that is quick and private. In the summer we grow vines for pumpkin and rumbo squash on the garden fence. It gives us a ton of privacy for the growing season. Even the trumpet vine would only be good in the summer months.

Im with Catjac on this one do the evergreen hedge to give you more coverage year round. What fun is a hot tub if you can't use it in the winter? ;)

But then I'm of the opinion if they are going to look then might as well to put on a show. :ep :th

Now if you can just find something to dampen the noises....ERR....conversations, yeah conversations from the hot tub....

Gotta hide from Gladys Kravitz?

Plant some poison oak and let her come and try to snoop through it! Add some thorny vines in it to make sure the poison oak gets in real good. ooo ooo ooo! stick in some montana prickly pear cactus too to go right through her shoes!

either that or find someone who can twitch their nose and put a spell on her! :p

kidding!!!

Actually, there are plants known as security plants for landscaping. century plants under windows are pretty effective at protecting from cat burglars. sure can slow one down. that kind of thing.
