Asparagus

I have staggered plantings of asparagus & this yr will be the first yr I get to harvest any & I can't wait!! Next yr we will be able to start on the other half too. I am planting 10 more crowns this yr too. I had 9 out of the the last 2 ten come up so 18 in all right now. I am hoping that will be enough to sustain my family(who loves it) & parents too with it for the yr(can it). This past fall when I was inspecting it I discovered a few new shoots form the oldest plants, so I may get 2 tmes to cut it a yr due to our weather patterns.

Does anyone grow asperagus in the south? I dream of a bed but I think our winters are too mild and the summer too hot?

It looks like homesteadmom in Arizona grows it (the post right before yours). Sounds like it might work! The catalogues would give a range of zones where asparagus grows.

I am able to grow them in Georgia. I planted them in a raised bed. I think we filled the bed with compost and horse manure and I just topped it again with some aged manure.

Our weather here has been extremely cold this year. A couple of weeks ago when I cleaned the bed up, I did find one lonely asparagus spear. The freezes we have had lately, did knock back the one lonely spear. I think they all will start coming up soon.

:mowI am ready for spring time, I'm not a big fan of the cold!!:watering

Obsessed, I grow it in the desert of Az & so far the plants have done great! The heat has not hurt them at all, I do have mine in a raised bed too. I have to water a lot anyway for everything else, so it does not make any difference. I use the straw from the nesting boxes to mulch with. We have mild winters most of the time too, a few nights of freezing temps & that is it.
