Ava planted her melon seeds on Thursday and in less than 48 hours they have germinated. I'd say she is off to a good start. I am going to email this photo to her because I will not see her again until Tuesday.

What kind of melons are they Jack! :) I usually plant the seeds in pots, perhaps sprouting them first is better.

The melons are a hybrid called Sween 'N Early that someone recommended on the forum last year. They are supposed to do well in our short season, but we will see as we have never tried melons before. Ava can easily eat a melon a day, so it is her project. I only start them in coffee filters and transfer them to grow cubes after the radicle emerges. There is no sense wasting cubes on any seeds that don't germinate. Also, I feel that the seeds that germinate first generally have the best genes and vigor. I transferred the seeds to cubes this afternoon.

do you get these melons to grow in your greenhouse? or later transfer them somewhere outside? do they take up a lot of space or are they a compact type?

Ava has a small plot outside. I will grow them inside and in the greenhouse and then plant them in her plot in mid May. As far as the size, I have no idea of how large the plants will be. My plan is to build a trellis and let them climb to keep them off the ground and prevent mildew. This is kind of an experiment with us.

Let Ava know I think she should grow 360 acres of melons! That way she might have some to sell and become famous as the youngest melon farmer in the world.

Have you heard what the price for some special melons in japan is? Like, a bazillion dollars per melon! Well, big huge numbers of yens which is still lots of thousands of dollars. per melon! i saw a youtube video about it.

Marshall,
Send me a few of those special Japanese melon seeds if you come across any, as I could sure use a bazillion dollars to pay my New York state taxes.
