Blue potato from the store-grow it?

I have been looking at the mini red,white,and blue potato bags at the store,and wondering if they would grow well.

Anyone tried growing the blue potato from the store?

Sometimes potatoes are sprayed with sprout inhibitors. I just planted store potatoes, but they were organic and already had some good eyes. I'll find out in a week or so if they are growing

It might be worth an experiment, but certified seed potatoes are your best bet.

I did not know about the spray. Yuck. I will look for organic.

I was digging out my compost yesterday to spread on my new-turned rows. (My compost is probably closer to a Worm Pile than a compost pile, as it doesn't get very hot, and it seems to break down to a pile of mud rather than a fluffy pile of compost, but... anyway.)

So I'm digging out my compost, and I turned over a little cluster of pink oblong... things. I looked closer, to make sure they weren't plastic/bugs/mice/something horrid, and was surprised to see they were teenytiny red potatoes!

I didn't notice any leaves above, and didn't think I'd tossed any whole potatoes (tho I must've). Most of the potatoes I purchase aren't organic.

Wish I'd done that on purpose, or could have salvaged the ones I found. I'd like to do red potatoes.

I've had soooo many storeboughten potatoes not just sprout but grow pretty long shoots -- what can I say, sometimes I forget about that last tater in the bag -- that I think it is perfectly reasonable to try it if you cannot get proper disease-free seed potato stock, or if you just want to try a very *few* potatoes of that variety, less than a seed-potato order would be.

However, especially with the prices of the "mini fancy boutique" potatoes in grocery stores being sometimes HIGHER than the price of seed-potato stock, if you want to plant a reasonable amount of them it might be smarter to stick to real seed potatoes.
