Can these grow in containers or must be planted?

Bottom on, felt pad added.
Now painted a bit and some dirt added, but I watered yesterday, so it'll be a few days before it's dry and I can pop it out to transplant!

Hostas seem a bit happier in the shade, no new/further damage. *phew* We'll see if they still need to go further back or if those are permanent spots for them.

The gladiolus are finally thinking of flowering! We'll, Just this one. Added a stake for support, FB is full of flopped stalks.
The freesia have failed, they're still like 2-3in tall.
