Chitting or Green Sprouting Potatoes?

@Beekissed, I know, had more potatoes than I thought and ran out of room have to save some dirt for the warm weather stuff. Maine potato lady said to crowd them a bit and they would not get as big. Maybe I should have saved some of them for eating?

Or stuffed some in containers? I'm going to be throwing my left over from winter spuds in the compost bin and covering them over with straw, leaves, wood chips, etc. We'll see what pops up.

I just need more land, I'm share cropping on about 20' of my neighbor now!

Hey...I think it's just wonderful you are trying to grow anything at all on a small space. I think everyone should be trying to grow a little something, no matter how small a space they have...just makes sense to do so. Over in the UK folks have allotments, some very small, some a little larger, but seems like they all are limited on space, water, what they are allowed to grow or have, etc., but many of those people rent those spaces through several generations of their family, just trying to grow something fresh to eat.

We are very fortunate here in the states in the amount of land we have. When I drive by churches in town with sweeping, wonderfully groomed lawns it always makes me wonder why they don't turn that into a garden/food ministry instead of trying to get folks to mow it every week.

I have about every inch of 2500 sq ft. Planted or planned to plant, usually get lots of food!

Taters are up! Supposed to get below freezing temps for 3-4 days this weekend, so I lightly covered those lovely green leaves with some loose, dry leaves for insulation.

Planted more spuds in the compost bin and covered over with loose straw. Will add some leaves and some composted straw later on and will keep doing that until I get a good depth on that stuff. Those taters were just spare red pontiac spuds I had in here in the bin...they had lovely purpley-green "chits" on them, so they should do well.

I may plant a few more of those spare spuds up in the coop litter, right where the light comes in the windows. Get's plenty of rain there and it would be interesting to see if they do well there. Don't know if the chooks will nip off the leaves or not....most likely they won't, having plenty of other and better greens on which to eat out there.

Wifey found 6-8 sprouted red potatoes in the cupboard, of course I found room for them!
