Chieftain is the king of the six types that I grow. The largest tuber was two pounds, and it was not hollow in the center. The tubers are prolific and very large.

That is nice! How big of an area is that?

My potatoes are planted in rows usually four rows each being 25 feet long. The rows are two feet centre to centre and each plant is one foot from centrer to centre. About one square foot of growing area per plant. Less than 100 seed potatoes. I expect about 3 to 6 pounds per plant. When at maturity it is desirable to have the space between the rows shaded by vegetation to inhibit moisture loss. I only hill once or at most twice.

Thank you for the pictures. I can see I am cutting my potato seed too small. I have a friend and sent her the link to your pictures and she said they are cutting their seed too small too. I am not sure what would be good to plant in the space between the rows, bush beans?

How close produce is planted is subjective to a large degree. Space left between rows is what one feels comfortable with. It is necessary to pick the produce meaning there must be room to operate without too much stress. In a home garden with hand picking one can use very close plant spacing.

A bit of space must be left for potatoes so hilling can be done. A square foot from centre to centre is about right. I like 12 to 16 inches in the row and 24 inches between rows, since one must pick bugs and have a bit of soil for hilling to keep the new tubers covered.

I use very close row spacing (12 inches or less) and separate the plants in the row to allow for maximum growth.

Excessive bare soil space between rows is self defeating in that the soil is simply dried out by the Sun.
