Can I plant clematis on the outside of the chicken run to give them shade? Or will they just eat it to death? I currently have 3" by 2" wire in the outside of the run and chicken wire on the inside of the run. I stapled the wires to the support beam of it and zip-ties the top of the chicken wire (3 feet tall) to the 2" by 3".

Hi there :frow

I grow lots of clematis & my chickens ignore them totally. I grew one up the end of the roo's enclosure, to shade them from the midday sun & it worked perfectly! So GO FOR IT! :thumbsup Just pick a really rampant one because some are pretty sparse. :D

Good Luck! :happy_flower

The only problem I would foresee is that clematis wants cool moist roots, whereas chickens want to rip the soil up so things get hot and dry. I'd suggest putting a coupla big pavers or similar thing over the clematis' roots and everybody should be happy, although it may be necessary to protect low new growth til it gets tall and woody enough to be unpalatable to chickens.

Good luck, hav fun,

Pat
