damson and stanley plum

i've read to prune fruit trees and keep vertical to 45degree limbs. most of the pictures i've seen of plum trees the branches grow more upwards. I'm getting the two plum trees in the subject heading, so is it just a bad prune job or will they only grow up like that

My damsons are 85 yrs old and 3 new saplings so I can't tell you. I am in a watch and see mode right now.
