The sprinkler motion detectors run off a hose, so if you have an outdoor hose bib you could use it. Google scarecrow sprinklers.
Or, there's always fencing.

You could try a big sign out front...
'Warning, Stop your big dog from crapping in my yard or it may never come home again'

I might ask around, see if someone knows the owner of a big dog they may have seen wandering the neighborhood.

I vote for knocking on neighbors doors-someone is bound to know who the dog belongs to... Nothing worse than dog owners that allow that kind of behavior. Gives all dog owners a bad name! I know it is early, but maybe you could watch outside your window and at least see what direction he trots off in. Good luck!

does this dog like to dump in one general area or is random? if a general area get a game camera too get its photo, somebody must know who it belongs too...
once you find out show it to the county animal control officer.
sure worked for me no more neighbors dog it's either pened or on it's running.

You dont need a sprinkler system just outside water hookup for hose. I believe they are called water canones.

Thistle... our morning paper has to be delivered next to the front door ( county ordinance) between 3 and 5 AM so the deliveryman just might get wetter than the rain would do. I have 3 trees and 4 bushes as well as 200-300 lb. boulders on our front side property line, so I can't install a fence there. lavender2, and Lesa... I live at the end of our cul de sac and I see it turn Left and quickly trot on the road which is about 3 miles long with many side streets. We get up at 5 AM, so I drove up and down and I quickly loose it. I asked around the neighborhood and noone can actually identify where it lives other than saying that the people over there have a dog, but not that one. I considered posting that type of a sign around the neighborhood, however if someone's dog turns up missing ...the local do gooder animal rights group types would accuse me of animal cruelty and could face a law suit because of these interfering vociferous bleeding hearts. Major ... I have seen this dog trotting off at 5 AM 5 days ago, he quickly runs off and I loose sight of it in short order. There is NO County animal control officer here due to budgetary cuts ( claiming too low property taxes ... WHAT ??? the taxes have been raised 2 times in the last 2 years ) so it is left to the animal rescue groups which are of NO HELP WHATSOEVER . Just a total pain in the arrrrse ! Thank you for your suggestions and Please keep the advise coming or until I stumble onto a solution .

LOL, this is one we actually considered when we had rude neighbors letting their 2 german shepherds run all over us. Also thought about paintballing deer in the garden.

I don't know, Bob, short of fencing, there's not much else. You can try the animal control officers or sheriff first maybe, if you have a leash law in your county/town. I've tried the talk-to-neighbors approach too with the German shepherd situation--4 times we went up and tried to talk it out. We were polite, but firm. Each time we were told the dogs would be contained, but they never were. People know better than to let their dog run like that, they just don't care. (Thankfully they eventually had to move from their rental house.) Short of making the dog mysteriously disappear to the pound (at least they'd have to pay a $100 fee here to bail it out) or permanently making the dog disappear, that leaves you with fencing. The cost may be well worth it if it spares your blood pressure from rising and gives you peace each day. That's the conclusion we came to anyway. Good fences make good neighbors...

Son and a neighborhood dog that visited frequently. Would get his dog all upset. Poop in his yard, etc... he knew who owned. They had no intent to do anything about it. They have ALWAYS had a dog (or 2 ) they let run. Yes there are leash laws. Finally he would shut it up in his garage and call animal control. They took it to pound on several occasions. After having to PAY the big bucks to get dog sprung they got better about keeping it at home.

Valium in a chunk of hamburger meat placed near his potty spot. Dog eats, dog sleeps, bobm stuffs dog in kennel and hauls to pound. (after dog wakes up of course, wouldn't want any bleeding hearts upset that dog went to nighty-night)
