OK

I have a older man down the road from me that I do odd jobs for. He has 3 very large walnut trees in his yard, which until the last 2 years, have produced really well. He has some good dry nuts from 2 years ago and I am thinking of planting some to grow trees for me.

Anyone every try something like this? When can I expect production from these if they do grow? Should I start them in pots or directly in the soil they will grow? or is this all just nuts? sorry I could resist.

If your neighbors tree is grafted then the seed may not produce a true tree to the parent.

You can easily grow walnuts from seed and they tend to produce within 6-7 years when grown this way. You may get flowering or production earlier but it is recommended that you remove these to promote stronger growth.

Also, to ensure pollination (although they self-pollinate) you should plant at least 3 trees.

I would start them in pots. Perhaps soaking or cracking the seed (as you would a peach seed) may help in germination.

Good luck!
