I am sorry, I can't get a photo. My camera battery died and I can't find the charger. I am trying to ID a tree. Bark is red in color. The new growth on the tree is palmated, like moose antlers. But the older growth is normal looking, with the branches covered in short needles. I tried looking on line, but can't find anything. If anyone has any idea at all it would help.

Thanks,
Anna

Need to know what zone you are, preferably also what geographic area?

Also, I'm unsure from your description, is this a conifer we're talking about, not a broadleaf evergreen?

Sorry. I am in PA, near Philly, zone 7(I think). I think the tree is native to China or around at area. It is a conifer. The needles are short and green. It is not mine, I am trying to help my MIL ID it.

Except for the "new growth is palmated like moose antlers" (unless you just mean the developing needles at the growing points are curled) it sounds to me pretty much like dawn redwood, Metasequoia glyptosomethingorother. There are a considerable number of them planted in the Philly area (which is where I'm from), I think originally from Morris Arboretum stock. Google it and see if that matches whatcha got?
