If I were you I would get all that grass and weeds away from the trees. The grass roots deprive the trees of nutrients and to fertilize the trees, the grass would use it all up.

I removed the grass a foot all around my trees and put a weed barrier edge around mine. They are 4 years old and about 7' tall now and have their first group of pawpaws on this year.

I'm not growing hundreds of them to produce tons of fruit, so the grass is fine.

Actually it isn't but if you don't want to bother, then don't remove it.

For any other gardener: Any time you plant a small tree, remove the weeds and grass around it so that the roots do not compete with the plant for nutrients.

It really is. These are understory trees, not sterile fruit farm trees. They'll survive or not, no reason to baby culls.
