Asparagus!!!
Went out to see if anything I'd planted had broke ground and ended up with a nice bunch of asparagus for dinner.
Oh yes, radishes, potatoes and carrots have popped up, and the strawberries are covered with blooms.

We had our first asparagus last night, too! And I'm also hoping for an early strawberry harvest. Everything seems to be running about a month early this year. As long as this doesn't mean a bunch of 90+degree days this summer, I'm on board with an early spring. :)

Just no perennials here . . . oh, there is quite a crop of rhubarb coming on. And once again, there are strawberries in the backyard. Now if I can just convince PieMaker (aka, DearWife) that rhubarb pie is better with the addition of strawberries.

The last strawberry plants we had years ago, she wanted gone-gone-gone! I'll have to admit that they were in a bad location . This time she wanted the pathetic rose bushes that only got a enuf sunlight for a couple blooms but still snatched at us with their torny branches, gone-gone-gone. I hope the strawberries get enuf light even if the roses did not :).

Asparagus used to be available just for the harvesting. I suppose I could still search out a few upland locations but it showed up all along the river once the high water began to drop! Then, I discovered that the parks department was covering all the popular spots for summer picnics and swimming with gravel & sand because of heavy metal contamination of the shoreline . . . I rethought my habit of harvesting the asparagus. . . .

Congradulations on that asparagus Dickiebird.

Can you grow asparagus in a container, like a 15 gallon bucket? If so, how much would it produce? Enough for 2 people for dinner?

I would think it would grow nicely in a container that size, but I don't think you'd get enough to feed 2 people very often.
I have harvested a few stalks at a time and placed them, cut end down, in a glass of water in the fridg until I got enough to eat. They will sometimes grow in the water.

Somewhere I saw a video of an asparagus packing plant, all their's was cut the same length and packed in wooden crates. They packed it with the head end against one end of the crate and a 2" space between the cut end and the other end of the crate, the reason being the asparagus would continue to grow in shipment!!!
